'Für Sama' ist ein intimer, persönlicher und zutiefst ergreifender Dokumentarfilm während des syrischen Bürgerkriegs aus der Sicht einer jungen Frau und Mutter, eine Liebeserklärung einer jungen Mutter an ihre Tochter. Der Film von Waad Al-Kateab und Edward Watts erzählt die Geschichte von Waad al-Kateabs Leben in 'Aleppo', angefangen von den Aufständen in der syrischen Stadt über die Liebe zu ihrem Mann, ihre Hochzeit bis hin zur Geburt ihrer Tochter Sama - und all das inmitten eines katastrophalen Krieges. Mit ihrer Kamera liefert al-Kateab unfassbare Bilder über Verlust, Freude und Überleben, und über allem schwebt die Frage: Soll sie aus der Stadt fliehen, um das Leben ihrer Tochter zu beschützen? Auch wenn das Verlassen des geliebten Heimatlandes bedeuten würde, den Kampf für die Freiheit aufzugeben, für den sie so viel geopfert hat...

'Für Sama' (2019) gewann im Produktionsjahr in Cannes den 'L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary' und den Publikumspreis sowie den 'Grand Jury Award' als bester Dokumentarfilm beim 'SXSW' 2019, dazu den Sonderpreis der Jury beim 'Hot Docs' 2019 und den 'Bayern 2' und 'SZ' Publikumspreis auf dem Filmfest München 2019. Der bundesweite deutsche Kinostart fand am 5. März 2020 statt, aufgrund der Corona-Krise wurde anschließend ein Re-Start im Kino zum 18. Juni 2020 bekanntgegeben, in der offiziellen Mitteilung: "Der preisgekrönte Dokumentarfilm 'Für Sama' ist am 15. März 2020 kurz vor der Coronakrise sehr erfolgreich im Kino angelaufen und erreichte über 15.000 Besucher, bevor die Kinos schließen mussten. Endlich kann das bewegende Zeitzeugnis der Filmemacherin und Menschenrechtsaktivistin Waad al-Kateab am 18. Juni 2020 seinen Re-Start in den deutschen Kinos erleben - jetzt auch in deutscher Fassung verfügbar (Voice-Over)".
