Leevi (Janne Puustinen) studiert in Paris Literaturwissenschaften und müsste in den Sommerferien eigentlich seine Abschlussarbeit über Arthur Rimbaud und Kaarlo Sarkia schreiben. Stattdessen kommt er zu Besuch nach Finnland, um seinem Vater, der mit dem Studium wenig anfangen kann und vom Schwulsein seines Sohnes nichts wissen möchte, bei der Renovierung des alten Ferienhauses zu helfen. Zur Hand gehen soll ihnen dabei der junge Syrer Tareq (Boodi Kabbani), der als Flüchtling nach Finnland gekommen ist. Als der Vater die beiden jungen Männer für einige Zeit alleine lässt, kommen sich Leevi und Tareq körperlich und emotional immer näher...

Leevi (Janne Puustinen) is studying literature in Paris and should actually be writing his thesis on Arthur Rimbaud and Kaarlo Sarkia during the summer holidays. Instead, he comes to visit Finland to help his father, who has little to do with his studies and doesn't want to know anything about his son's gayness, with the renovation of the old holiday home. They are supposed to be helped by the young Syrian Tareq (Boodi Kabbani), who has come to Finland as a refugee. Director Mikko Mäkelä elegantly interweaves the different life and family perspectives of the emigrant Leevi and the immigrant Tareq. "I see this country differently than you do," Tareq says to Leevi at one point. "It's my home now." From a carefree romance in the middle of a Scandinavian summer idyll, 'The Cabin by the Lake' develops into a multi-layered and contemporary film about the question of origin and the search for a new home, thanks to its two outstanding leading actors Janne Puustinen and Boodi Kabbani.
