Vietnam 2001. Die jungen Bergleute Viet (Duy Bao Dịnh Dao ) und Nam (Thanh Hai Pham) lieben sich. Zusammen schuften sie tausend Meter unter der Erde, wo Dunkelheit herrscht und Gefahren lauern. Die Kohle umschließt sie, unbarmherzig, staubig, nass. Gemeinsam machen sich die beiden auf die Suche nach Nams Vater, der im Krieg verschollen ist, und durchqueren das Land von Norden nach Süden. Doch eigentlich will Nam im Ausland ein neues Leben beginnen. Als er beschließt, Vietnam im Inneren eines Schiffscontainers zu verlassen, droht zwischen den Geliebten etwas zu zerbrechen...
Trương Minh Quý erzählt in seinem Kinodrama 'Viet und Nam' (2024) die Geschichte einer Liebe, die nicht nur von schwierigen Lebensumständen geprägt ist, sondern auch von nationalen und familiären Traumata, von Geistern der Vergangenheit. Trương findet Bilder, die in ihrer poetischen Kraft dem Kino Apichatpong Weerasethakuls gleichkommen. Sex auf einem Berg schwarzer Kohlen funkelte nie schöner aus dem Dunkeln heraus. Regisseur Trương wurde in 'Buon Ma Thuot', einer kleinen Stadt im zentralen Hochland Vietnams, geboren. 2008 brach er seine Ausbildung an der Filmhochschule ab, um im Independent-Bereich Filme zu machen. Seitdem lebt er an verschiedenen Orten, neben seinem Heimatland auch in Belgien und Frankreich. Er ist Alumnus der Asian-Film-Academy 2012 (Busan-International-Filmfestival) und Berlinale-Talents 2016. Seine Arbeiten, die sich zwischen Dokumentarfilm und Fiktion bewegen, wurden international auf Filmfestivals und in Ausstellungen vorgeführt, beispielsweise in Locarno, New York, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, Busan, München und Cannes. Sein zweiter Langfilm 'The Tree House' feierte seine Weltpremiere in Locarno und wurde von 'Mubi' als eine der "drei besten Premieren des Festivals" bezeichnet sowie von 'The Film Stage' als "eine einzigartige, mitreißende Ode an die Erinnerung und das Filmemachen". Der Film lief außerdem beim New-York-Filmfestival, beim Vienna-International-Filmfestival, dem Festival 'Des 3 Continents', dem Rotterdam-International-Filmfestival, 'CPH:Dox' und dem Göteborg-International-Filmfestival. Im Jahr 2021 lief sein französischsprachiger Kurzfilm 'Les Attendants' im Wettbewerb um den 'Goldenen Bären' der Berlinale. Sein vorliegender dritter Spielfilm 'Viet und Nam' feierte 2024 in Cannes seine Weltpremiere und wurde im selben Jahr beim Filmfest in München mit dem CineRebels-Award ausgezeichnet. Der bundesweite Kinostart in Deutschland fand am 4. September 2025 statt.

In his cinema drama 'Viet and Nam' (2024), Trương Minh Quý tells the story of a love that is not only marked by difficult living conditions, but also by national and family traumas, by ghosts of the past. Trương finds images that are on a par with Apichatpong Weerasethakul's cinema in their poetic power. Sex on a mountain of black coals has never sparkled more beautifully out of the dark. Director Trương was born in 'Buon Ma Thuot', a small town in the central highlands of Vietnam. In 2008, he dropped out of film school to make films in the independent sector. Since then, he has lived in various places, in addition to his home country also in Belgium and France. He is an alumnus of the Asian Film Academy 2012 (Busan International Film Festival) and Berlinale Talents 2016. His works, which range between documentary and fiction, have been shown internationally at film festivals and exhibitions, for example in Locarno, New York, Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, Busan, Munich and Cannes. His second feature film 'The Tree House' celebrated its world premiere in Locarno and was described by 'Mubi' as one of the "three best premieres of the festival" and by 'The Film Stage' as "a unique, stirring ode to memory and filmmaking". The film was also screened at the New York Film Festival, the Vienna International Film Festival, the 'Des 3 Continents' Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, 'CPH:Dox' and the Gothenburg International Film Festival. In 2021, his French-language short film 'Les Attendants' was in competition for the 'Golden Bear' at the Berlinale.
