'The King - Mit Elvis durch Amerika' ist zugleich politische Bestandsaufnahme und kulturelles Porträt. Auf seiner Reise trifft Jarecki an zahllosen Orten auf Mitreisende, manche prominent, andere nicht, die in dem Auto über Elvis und Amerika reden, eine Parallelaufnahme über den Aufstieg des Sängers und Abstieg seines Landes. So wie Elvis sich verführen lässt und an dem Giftcocktail von Geld und Machtgier zugrunde geht, wird auch das Land vom Raubtierkapitalismus ausgehöhlt, in dem ein Spielkasinobesitzer und Reality-TV-Star mit bislang unerreichter Vulgarität das Präsidentenamt innehat und auftritt wie ein Monarch. Set against the backdrop of the 2016 presidential election, 'Promised Land' takes its musical journey across America in Elvis Presley's 1963 'Rolls Royce' to explore how a small-town boy lost his authenticity and became a king while his country lost its democracy and became an empire: a musical road movie that takes us across America. 40 years after the death of Elvis Presley, the award-winning writer and director Eugene Jarecki traveled in the singer's old Rolls-Royce from New York to Las Vegas to the Deep South during the 2016 presidential election campaign to experience the country at a critical turning point in its history. 'The King - With Elvis through America' is both a political stocktaking and a cultural portrait. On his journey, Jarecki meets fellow travelers in countless places, some prominent, others not, who talk about Elvis and America in the car, a parallel shot about the rise of the singer and the decline of his country. Just as Elvis allows himself to be seduced and perishes from the poisonous cocktail of money and greed for power, the country is also hollowed out by predatory capitalism, in which a casino owner and reality TV star holds the presidency with unprecedented vulgarity and acts like a monarch.
