Taipeh in den 80ern. Gleich an seinem ersten Tag im Stadtviertel Monga wird dem siebzehnjährigen Mosquito (Mark Chao) klar: Du kannst nur überleben, wenn du stärker bist als die anderen. Gekonnt setzt er sich gegen die Schikane seiner Mitschüler zur Wehr und gewinnt die Anerkennung von 'Dragon Lee' (Rhydian Vaughan), dem Sohn des lokalen Gangsterbosses Geta, und seiner Freunde. Sie gründen die 'Prince Gang' und genießen ihr unbeschwertes Leben als halbstarke Gangster auf den Straßen Mongas. Doch der Zusammenhalt ihrer Bruderschaft wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt, als eine kriminelle Organisation von Festland-Chinesen beginnt, die Macht über Monga an sich zu reißen. Plötzlich regieren Schusswaffen, die traditionellen Werte der Unterwelt geraten ins Wanken – und für Mosquito und seine Freunde gibt es kein Zurück...
'Monga - Gangs of Taipeh' ist ein bildgewaltiges Action-Drama, das mit spektakulären Kampfszenen und voller Nostalgie von einer vergangenen Gangsterära erzählt. Der Film wurde mit dem 'NETPAC Award' beim Hawaii International Film Festival 2010 zum besten asiatischen Film gekürt, lief im Panorama-Programm der Berlinale und ging außerdem ins Rennen um den Oscar als Taiwans offizieller Beitrag in der Kategorie 'Bester ausländischer Film'.

Taipei in the 80s. On his very first day in the Monga district, seventeen-year-old Mosquito (Mark Chao) realizes: You can only survive if you are stronger than the others. He skillfully defends himself against the harassment of his classmates and wins the approval of 'Dragon Lee' (Rhydian Vaughan), the son of the local gangster boss Geta, and his friends. 'Monga - Gangs of Taipei' is a visually stunning action drama that tells of a bygone gangster era with spectacular fight scenes and full of nostalgia. The film won the 'NETPAC Award' at the 2010 Hawaii International Film Festival for Best Asian Film, screened in the Panorama programme of the Berlinale and was also in the running for the Oscar as Taiwan's official entry in the category 'Best Foreign Film'.
