Sie gehört zu den schnellsten Großseglern der Welt und besticht durch ihre klassischen Linien: die Groch Fock - das Segelschulschiff der Deutschen Marine. Als Kriegsschiff völlig unbrauchbar, als schwimmender Botschafter der Bundesrepublik ein Glanzstück in jedem Hafen und als Ausbildungsplatz einzigartig und knallhart. Die Marine rekrutiert ihre Seeoffiziere von der Ausbildung auf diesem Schiff. Und selbst wenn sich die Gorch Fock nicht dazu eignet, im Ernstfall auch nur einen Schuß abzufeuern, hat sie sich für die Bundeswehr längst bezahlt gemacht. Seemännisch liefert der Segler eine Erfolgsstory: Er gehört zu den schnellsten und am härtesten gesegelten Windjammern. Wenn die Gorch Fork zu spektakulärem Regatten rund um die Welt antritt, kommt sie stets im Feld der Ersten, nicht selten sogar als Siegerin ins Ziel. Der Film begleitet die Gorch Fock auf eienr Ausbildungsreise über den Atlantik, bei der sie die Großsegelregatta "Tall Ship 2000" gewinnt. Er hält Rückschau auf die Zeit des Baus des Schiffes und ist beim Staffellauf 1958 dabei. Die Dokumentation folgt der Geschichte des Schiffes bis in die Gegenwart und widmet sich dabei vor allem dem Ausbildungsalltag an Bord.

The Navy recruits its naval officers from the training on this ship. And even if the Gorch Fock is not suitable for firing even one shot in an emergency, it has long since paid off for the Bundeswehr. In terms of seamanship, the sailor delivers a success story: He is one of the fastest and hardest sailed windjammers. When the Gorch Fork competes in spectacular regattas around the world, she always finishes in the field of the first, often even as the winner. The film accompanies the Gorch Fock on a training trip across the Atlantic, where she wins the mainsail regatta "Tall Ship 2000". He looks back on the time of the ship's construction and takes part in the relay race in 1958. The documentary follows the history of the ship up to the present day and is mainly dedicated to everyday training on board.
