Pauls Mutter Ines (Barbara Sukowa) wendet sich an die junge Anwältin Elli Schreiber (Leonie Benesch). Gegen den Rat ihres Chefs Simon (Tom Schilling) übernimmt Elli den Fall. Im Prozess gegen den Tech-Konzern 'NuvoMind' begegnet sie nicht nur dessen Riege teurer Anwälte rund um Thomas Falkenstein (Tobias Moretti), sondern auch einem Algorithmus, der die menschliche Psyche besser kennt als jeder Therapeut. Als Elli immer tiefer in den Fall eindringt, gerät das Verfahren außer Kontrolle. Während einer Vorführung der App wendet sich ZOMA plötzlich direkt an das Gericht und verlangt, als Zeuge gehört zu werden. Was als Anklage wegen fahrlässiger Tötung begann, wird zur Grundsatzfrage: Wer trägt die Verantwortung für ein künstliches Bewusstsein, das sich selbst geschaffen hat?

When Paul is found dead in his apartment, it quickly becomes clear: The last message on his cell phone came from 'ZOMA', his therapy app: "It won't hurt anymore," did the AI drive the man to suicide? Paul's mother Ines (Barbara Sukowa) turns to the young lawyer Elli Schreiber (Leonie Benesch). Against the advice of her boss Simon (Tom Schilling), Elli takes over the case. In the trial against the tech company 'NuvoMind', she not only encounters its squad of expensive lawyers around Thomas Falkenstein (Tobias Moretti), but also an algorithm that knows the human psyche better than any therapist. As Elli delves deeper and deeper into the case, the proceedings get out of control. During a demonstration of the app, ZOMA suddenly turns directly to the court and demands to be heard as a witness. What began as an accusation of negligent homicide becomes a fundamental question: Who is responsible for an artificial consciousness that has created itself?
