Sizilien im Sommer 1982. Während ganz Italien vom Gewinn der Fußball-WM träumt, träumen Gianni Accordino (Samuele Segreto) und Nino Scalia (Gabriele Pizzurro) von einer Liebe ohne Angst. Die beiden Teenager lernen sich mit einem großen Knall kennen, als sie auf einer Landstraße mit ihren Mopeds zusammendonnern. Um den Unfall wieder gut zu machen, bietet Nino dem anderen Jungen einen Job bei seinem Vater an, der Feuerwerke veranstaltet. Gianni und Nino werden erst Freunde und bald Geliebte. Doch als ihre konservativen Familien von der Beziehung erfahren, sehen sich die beiden brutalen Anfeindungen ausgesetzt. Wild entschlossen wollen Gianni und Nino für ihre Liebe kämpfen - und bringen sich damit in Lebensgefahr...
'Fireworks' (2023) basiert auf einer wahren Kriminalgeschichte, dem sogenannten 'Delitto di Giarre', das Anfang der 1980er Jahre zur Gründung von 'Arcigay - Associazione LGBTI+ italiana' geführt hat, dem bis heute wichtigsten Verband für queere Bürgerrechte in Italien. Getragen von seinen zwei fabelhaften Hauptdarstellern und unterlegt von der herzzerreißenden Musik des sizilianischen Sängers Franco Battiato, zeichnet der Film von Giuseppe Fiorello ein authentisches Porträt der höchst problematischen Lebenssituation von Schwulen im italienischen Süden nicht nur jener Jahre. In Italien wurde das mitreißende Liebesdrama u.a. mit dem 'Globo d’oro', dem italienischen 'Golden Globe', für den besten Debütfilm ausgezeichnet. The two teenagers get to know each other with a big bang when they thunder into each other on a country road with their mopeds. To make up for the accident, Nino offers the other boy a job with his father, who organizes fireworks. Gianni and Nino first become friends and soon lovers. But when their conservative families learn of the relationship, the two are exposed to brutal hostility. Fiercely determined, Gianni and Nino want to fight for their love - and thus put their lives in danger...
'Fireworks' (2023) is based on a true crime story, the so-called 'Delitto di Giarre', which led to the founding of 'Arcigay - Associazione LGBTI+ italiana' in the early 1980s, the most important association for queer civil rights in Italy to this day. Carried by its two fabulous leading actors and accompanied by the heartbreaking music of the Sicilian singer Franco Battiato, Giuseppe Fiorello's film draws an authentic portrait of the highly problematic living situation of gays in the Italian south, not only in those years. In Italy, the rousing romantic drama was awarded the 'Globo d'oro', the Italian 'Golden Globe', for the best debut film. Now 'Fireworks' is also shining on Germany's screens and German home cinemas.
