Doch mit melancholischer Leichtigkeit widmet sich die junge Anthropologin Parthenope (Neuentdeckung Celeste Dalla Porta) vor allem den philosophischen Fragen der Existenz: Was bedeutet Wissen, wie sehr lohnt sich Liebe, wie trifft uns die Vergänglichkeit? Auf ihrem Lebensweg von der lebenshungrigen Bohemienne zur angesehenen Wissenschaftlerin hat Parthenope romantische, groteske und immer inspirierende Begegnungen - und bleibt dabei unabhängig. Die traumhaften Orte und Menschen reflektieren alle Facetten Neapels. So entsteht ein farbenprächtiges Panoptikum aus Sehnsucht, Verlangen, Einsamkeit und tiefen Brüchen. Durch Daria D'Antonios Kamera, seit 'La Grande Bellezza' arbeitet Sorrentino bereits mit ihr zusammen, widmet sich der Oscar-prämierte Filmemacher ('La Grande Bellezza', 'Die Hand Gottes', 'Ewige Jugend') erneut seinem Lieblingsthema: der Schönheit, die erst unter der Oberfläche interessant wird. Dabei ist 'Parthenope' weit mehr als eine Projektionsfläche. So wie sich Neapel als opulent, aber nicht pittoresk, sondern abgründig und surreal präsentiert, ergründet 'Parthenope' die vielen Aspekte des Menschseins. Hinter dem unwirklich tiefen Blau des Meeres stehen die grellen Farben - eine Feier des Lebens, aber auch ein Meer an Traurigkeit. In addition to lead actress Celeste Dalla Porta, who makes her feature film debut as Parthenope, Stefania Sandrelli as the aged Parthenope also plays, Hollywood star Gary Oldman has a special appearance as disillusioned writer John Cheever, as well as Silvio Orlando as Devoto Marotta, Luisa Ranieri as Greta Cool, Isabella Ferrari as Flora Malva and Peppe Lanzetta as Bishop.
