'Johan' wurde im Sommer 1975 gedreht und startete, obgleich schon um die sexuell explizitesten Szenen gekürzt, nur zensiert in den Pariser Kinos. Der Film war ein Zeitgenosse von 'La cage aux folles' und gleichzeitig dessen totaler Gegenentwurf - wild, frei, radikal, experimentell, sexuell. Die hier vorliegende Fassung von 'Johan' ist die ursprüngliche, ungekürzte, die 1976 in der 'Section parallèle' in Cannes uraufgeführt wurde. Dank eines zufälligen Funds konnte sich 1996 das französische Filmarchiv des Films annehmen. Eigentlich hätte Johan der Hauptdarsteller eines Films sein sollen, ständig ist die Rede von seiner - mysteriös bleibenden - Person. Doch Johan sitzt im Gefängnis. Die Suche nach einem geeigneten Ersatz führt den Regisseur ins homosexuelle Milieu des Paris der 70er Jahre: zu Freunden und Feinden von Johan. Aber nachdem er die gesamte Schwulenszene abgesucht und tiefschürfende Diskussionen mit seiner Schwulen-Freundin und seiner Mutter geführt hat, kommt er zu dem unausweichlichen Schluss: Der schöne, geheimnisvolle Johan ist durch niemanden zu ersetzen...
'Johan' ist einerseits das Porträt eines jungen, exzentrischen Mannes und entwirft andererseits ein passioniertes Bild der Pariser Schwulenszene der 70er Jahre. Eine Zeit vor AIDS und eine Zeit vor dem ersten europäischen Gay-Pride, jenseits der Invasion kalifornischer Schwulenkultur. Nacktheit und expliziter Sex verkommen so auch nicht zu Pornographie und befriedigen keinen Voyeurismus, sondern sind Ausdruck eines ersten tiefen Selbstverständnis und grundlegender Freiheit schwuler Sexualität. Originell montiert, in quasi-dokumentarischen, realistischen Szenen erzählt, hat der Film bis heute nichts von seiner Aktualität verloren und besticht durch seinen unglaublichen Charme.

'Johan' was shot in the summer of 1975 and, although already shortened by the most sexually explicit scenes, was only censored in Parisian cinemas. The film was a contemporary of 'La cage aux folles' and at the same time its total opposite - wild, free, radical, experimental, sexual. The present version of 'Johan' is the original, unabridged one, which premiered in 1976 in the 'Section parallèle' in Cannes. Thanks to a chance find, the French film archive was able to take care of the film in 1996. Actually, Johan should have been the main actor of a film, there is constant talk of his - mysterious - person. But Johan is in prison. The search for a suitable replacement leads the director to the homosexual milieu of Paris in the 70s: to Johan's friends and enemies. But after searching the entire gay scene and having in-depth discussions with his gay girlfriend and his mother, he comes to the inevitable conclusion: The beautiful, mysterious Johan cannot be replaced by anyone...
'Johan' is on the one hand the portrait of a young, eccentric man and on the other hand creates a passionate picture of the Parisian gay scene of the 70s. A time before AIDS and a time before the first European gay pride, beyond the invasion of Californian gay culture. Nudity and explicit sex do not degenerate into pornography and do not satisfy voyeurism, but are an expression of a first deep self-understanding and fundamental freedom of gay sexuality. Originally edited, told in quasi-documentary, realistic scenes, the film has lost none of its topicality to this day and captivates with its incredible charm.
