Santiago de Chile 1973 kurz vor dem Putsch gegen Salvador Allende. Pedro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna) kommt in die Klasse von Gonzalo Infante (Matías Quer). Er ist einer der Jungen aus den Elendsvierteln, denen Pater McEnroe (Ernesto Malbrán), der sozial engagierte Schulleiter von St.Patrick, den Besuch der elitären Privatschule ermöglicht. Die beiden Elfjährigen schließen trotz unterschiedlicher Herkunft Freundschaft. Gonzalo lernt durch Pedro die Welt jenseits der eigenen behüteten Verhältnisse kennen - die Slums am Mapocho, der die Stadt durchfließt und Arme von Reichen trennt. Da Pedro für seinen Lebensunterhalt arbeiten muss, hilft Gonzalo seinem Freund. Zusammen mit Silvana (Manuela Martelli) verkaufen sie Fahnen an die vielen Demonstranten in der Stadt, sowohl an die Gegner als auch an die Anhänger Allendes. Beide Jungs verlieben sich in das Mädchen. Großzügig verteilt Silvana ihre Küsse und erstickt damit alle Eifersüchteleien. Täglich radelt Gonzalo nun in das Elendsviertel, wo er Herzlichkeit, Gemeinschaft und Zuneigung erfährt. Niemand scheint den drei Freunden etwas anhaben zu können. Doch als die wirtschaftlichen und politischen Spannungen zunehmen, bricht die soziale Kluft auch zwischen ihnen in aller Schärfe auf. Silvana, die kleine Kommunistin, läßt ihre Wut und Verzweiflung an Gonzalo aus. Dessen Familie unterstützt die Streiks und die politisch Rechten. Gonzalos Freundschaft mit Pedro und dem Mädchen steht auf die Kippe. Der Militärputsch am 11. September beendet nicht nur Gonzalos Kindheit.

Santiago de Chile in 1973, shortly before the coup against Salvador Allende. Pedro Machuca (Ariel Mateluna) joins Gonzalo Infante's (Matías Quer) class. He is one of the boys from the slums whom Father McEnroe (Ernesto Malbrán), the socially committed headmaster of St. Patrick, makes it possible for them to attend the elite private school. The two eleven-year-olds become friends despite their different origins. Through Pedro, Gonzalo gets to know the world beyond his own sheltered circumstances - the slums on the Mapocho, which flows through the city and separates the poor from the rich. Since Pedro has to work for a living, Gonzalo helps his friend. Together with Silvana (Manuela Martelli), they sell flags to the many demonstrators in the city, both to Allende's opponents and supporters. Both boys fall in love with the girl. Silvana generously distributes her kisses and thus suffocates all jealousies. Gonzalo now cycles daily to the slum, where he experiences warmth, community and affection. No one seems to be able to harm the three friends. But as economic and political tensions increase, the social divide between them also widens sharply. Silvana, the little communist, vents her anger and despair on Gonzalo. His family supports the strikes and the political right. Gonzalo's friendship with Pedro and the girl is on the brink. The military coup on September 11 not only ended Gonzalo's childhood.
