Sam Ali (Yahya Mahayni), ein junger und sensibler Syrer, ist bis über beide Ohren verliebt in seine Freundin Abeer (Dea Liane). Als er wegen einer Nichtigkeit ins Visier der politischen Polizei gerät, flieht er kurzerhand in den Libanon. Sam begegnet den regelmäßig scheiternden Versuchen, in Beirut einen Fuß an den Boden zu bekommen, mit trotziger Lebensenergie. Als sich Abeer allerdings entscheidet, einen Diplomaten zu heiraten und nach Belgien zu ziehen, scheint auch Sam zu kapitulieren. Wie soll ausgerechnet er seiner großen Liebe nach Europa folgen können? Seine Situation scheint aussichtslos bis er sich, des kostenlosen Buffets wegen, in die Ausstellungseröffnung einer Beiruter Galerie schleicht. Dort wird der international bekannte Künstler Jeffrey Godefroi (Koen De Bouw) auf ihn aufmerksam und macht Sam ein Angebot, dass ihn zu seiner geliebten Abeer bringen und er nicht ausschlagen kann. Sams Rücken soll Jeffrey als Leinwand dienen, auf den dieser eine große Abbildung des Schengen-Visums tätowieren will. Sam stimmt zu und wird so zu einem hochpreisigen Kunstwerk in den Ausstellungen des Starkünstlers, Reisefreiheit in ganz Europa inklusive. Erster Museumsstopp: Belgien. Mit einem Mal scheint Abeer ganz nah und Sam wähnt sich erstmals frei. Doch er hat seine Rechnung ohne die Dynamiken des Kunstmarkts und einer Gesellschaft gemacht, in der ein Kunstobjekt mehr zählt als die Geschichte eines syrischen Geflüchteten...
Regisseurin Kaouther Ben Hania verwebt in 'Der Mann, der seine Haut verkaufte' (2020) gekonnt politische Satire mit einer berührenden Fabel über Liebe, Freiheit und Identität. Die Urauführung feierte 'The Man Who Sold His Skin' mit Monica Bellucci als Soraya Waldy 2020 auf dem Filmfest in Venedig, wo Yahya Mahayni den Orizzonti-Preis als bester Hauptdarsteller gewann. Als erster tunesischer Film wurde er 2021 als bester internationaler Spielfilm für einen 'Oscar' nominiert.

Sam Ali (Yahya Mahayni), a young and sensitive Syrian, is head over heels in love with his girlfriend Abeer (Dea Liane). When he is targeted by the political police for a trivial matter, he flees to Lebanon without further ado. Sam meets the regularly failing attempts to get a foot on the ground in Beirut with defiant life energy. However, when Abeer decides to marry a diplomat and move to Belgium, Sam also seems to capitulate. How is he, of all people, supposed to be able to follow his great love to Europe? His situation seems hopeless until he sneaks into the exhibition opening of a Beirut gallery because of the free buffet. There, the internationally renowned artist Jeffrey Godefroi (Koen De Bouw) becomes aware of him and makes Sam an offer that will take him to his beloved Abeer and that he cannot refuse. Sam's back is to serve as a canvas for Jeffrey, on which he wants to tattoo a large image of the Schengen visa. Sam agrees and thus becomes a high-priced work of art in the star artist's exhibitions, including freedom of travel throughout Europe. First stop at the museum: Belgium. All of a sudden, Abeer seems very close and Sam thinks he is free for the first time. But he has made his calculations without the dynamics of the art market and a society in which an art object counts more than the story of a Syrian refugee...
In 'The Man Who Sold His Skin' (2020), director Kaouther Ben Hania skilfully interweaves political satire with a touching fable about love, freedom and identity. 'The Man Who Sold His Skin', starring Monica Bellucci as Soraya Waldy, premiered at the 2020 Venice Film Festival, where Yahya Mahayni won the Orizzonti Award for Best Actor. It was the first Tunisian film to be nominated for an 'Oscar' in 2021 as best international feature film.
