Eine Krise - zwölf Erzählungen. 'Die Welt jenseits der Stille' erkundet eine Welt im Ausnahmezustand. New York und Nairobi, Alto Xingu im Amazonasgebiet, Kuala Lumpur, Rom oder Haifa - zwischen Hoffnung und Verzweiflung, Empathie und Ignoranz, Resilienz und einem Gefühl, dem sich alle stellen müssen: der Verletzbarkeit unseres Daseins. Auf einmal steht die Welt still. Auf allen Kontinenten finden sich die Menschen in einem Lockdown wieder. Die Welt, wie wir sie kennen, ist Vergangenheit. Was kommen wird, ist ungewiss. Die Auswirkungen eines unsichtbaren Virus fordern die Gesellschaften heraus. Die Menschen sind auf sich selbst zurückgeworfen. Eine Mutter sieht während des Ausgangsverbots die ersten Schritte ihres Babys und sehnt sich nach ihrer Familie. Eine Altenpflegerin trägt in einem fremden Land eine alte Frau zu Grabe. Ein blinder Mann hört auf einmal eine ganz andere Welt. Ein obdachloser Pizzabote versteht, dass er wichtig ist und das ihm selbst das wichtigste fehlt: eine Wohnung. Ein Ehepaar muss sich einer jahrelangen Beziehungskrise stellen. Ein DJ schreibt Songs über den Weltuntergang und ist so kreativ wie nie zuvor. Eine junge Frau kehrt in die Welt ihrer ultraorthodoxen Kindheit zurück. Ein Klinikmitarbeiter separiert sich aus Liebe und sorgt für andere. Eine alleinerziehende Schuhputzerin sorgt sich um die Sicherheit ihrer Tochter. Ein Kampfsportlehrer aus China sucht Halt in einer fremden Welt. Die Bewohner eines indigenen Dorfes schotten sich ab und bauen vorsorglich ein Haus für die Infizierten. Und am Rande einer Stadt treiben Schäfer jeden Tag unbeirrt ihre Herde zu einer Quelle...
Der Dokumentarfilm 'Die Welt jenseits der Stille' (2021) von Manuel Fenn wurde von der 'Sunday Filmproduktion' produziert, in Koproduktion mit dem 'ZDF' und '3Sat' sowie gefördert durch die Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung 'mdm'. Seine Weltpremiere feierte diese Dokumentation beim 'DOK.fest München' und startete am 2. September 2021 im Verleih von '24 Bilder' bundesweit in den Kinos. Regisseur Fenn über seinen Film: "Im März 2020, unmittelbar zu Beginn des ersten Lockdowns in Deutschland, hatte ich zusammen mit den Produzenten von 'Sundayfilm' die Idee, einen weltumspannenden Dokumentarfilm über die Pandemie zu drehen. Das war zu einem Zeitpunkt, als wir wohl alle geschockt und zugleich ein Stück weit fasziniert davon waren, was ein Virus auf der Welt offenlegen und auslösen kann. Wir wollten ein filmisches Zeitdokument schaffen, das ein globales Phänomen global abbildet, allerdings fernab von den Zahlen, Fakten und Experten - Meinungen, die die Medien überfluteten. Wir wollten wissen: was macht die Pandemie mit den Menschen und wie beeinflußt sie ihr Leben? Wie gehen sie mit der unbekannten und bedrohlichen Situation um, welche Konsequenzen ziehen sie daraus? Die Pandemie als Auslöser für menschliche Reaktionen auf eine weltweite Krise - das hat uns interessiert. Was dann folgte, war für uns alle ein großes filmisches Abenteuer und letztlich auch ein Experiment. Zusammen mit den Regiekollegen Michele Cinque und Andreas Pichler und der Editorin Antonia Fenn bildeten wir ein Kreativteam, das in Windeseile zwölf Regisseure auf der ganzen Welt für unser Projekt gewinnen konnte. Nach den ersten Uploads des Rohmaterials wurde schnell der Reiz aber auch die Herausforderung für den Schnitt unseres Filmes klar: die zwölf Erzählungen hätten inhaltlich und stilistisch kaum unterschiedlicher sein können. Am Ende der halbjährigen Drehzeit hatten wir 160 Stunden vollkommen diverses Rohmaterial, das wir irgendwie zu einem in sich stimmigen Film zusammenfügen mussten. Unser aller Dank geht in erster Linie an die Protagonisten. Sie haben sich in einer Ausnahmesitutation mit der Kamera begleiten lassen, haben uns intime Einblicke in ihr Leben gewährt und uns an ihren Gedanken teil haben lassen. Ihnen wurde durch die Pandemie ihre Verletzbarkeit aber auch ihre Fähigkeit, damit umzugehen, vor Augen geführt. Sie alle einte der Zwang, Verzicht und Bescheidenheit zu üben, was ihnen in einer globalisierten, Freiheit liebenden und gleichzeitig auf Effizienz getrimmten Welt nicht leicht fiel. Ich hoffe, dass uns ein emotionaler und authentischer Film über das erste Jahr der Pandemie gelungen ist, in dem man merkt, dass die Menschen noch die Kraft und den Willen hatten, aus den Wunden, die das Virus aufgerissen hat, etwas zu lernen und aus dieser Krise irgendetwas Gutes für sich mit zu nehmen. Vielleicht schafft es ja unser Film, bei den nicht enden wollenden Entbehrungen und persönlichen Tragödien diese Aufbruchstimmung vom letzten Jahr ein Stück weit in die heutige Zeit zu retten."

Suddenly, the world stands still. On all continents, people find themselves in a lockdown. The world as we know it is a thing of the past. What will come is uncertain. The effects of an invisible virus are challenging societies. People are thrown back on themselves. A mother sees her baby's first steps during the curfew and longs for her family. A geriatric nurse buries an old woman in a foreign country. A blind man suddenly hears a completely different world. A homeless pizza delivery man understands that he is important and that he himself lacks the most important thing: an apartment. A married couple has to face a relationship crisis that has lasted for years. A DJ writes songs about the end of the world and is more creative than ever before. A young woman returns to the world of her ultra-Orthodox childhood. A clinic employee separates himself out of love and cares for others. A single mother shoeshine boy worries about her daughter's safety. A martial arts instructor from China is looking for support in a foreign world. The inhabitants of an indigenous village seal themselves off and build a house for the infected as a precaution. And on the outskirts of a city, shepherds drive their flock to a spring every day...
The documentary 'The World Beyond Silence' (2021) by Manuel Fenn was produced by 'Sunday Filmproduktion', in co-production with 'ZDF' and '3Sat' and funded by the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung 'mdm'. This documentary celebrated its world premiere at 'DOK.fest München' and was released in cinemas nationwide on 2 September 2021 as a distributor of '24 Bilder'. Director Fenn about his film: "In March 2020, right at the beginning of the first lockdown in Germany, I had the idea together with the producers of 'Sundayfilm' to make a global documentary about the pandemic. That was at a time when we were probably all shocked and at the same time a bit fascinated by what a virus can reveal and trigger in the world. We wanted to create a cinematic contemporary document that depicts a global phenomenon globally, but far away from the numbers, facts and experts - opinions that flooded the media. We wanted to know: what is the pandemic doing to people and how is it affecting their lives? How do they deal with the unknown and threatening situation, what consequences do they draw from it? The pandemic as a trigger for human reactions to a global crisis - that interested us. What followed was a great cinematic adventure for all of us and ultimately also an experiment. Together with fellow directors Michele Cinque and Andreas Pichler and editor Antonia Fenn, we formed a creative team that was able to win twelve directors from all over the world for our project in no time at all. After the first uploads of the raw material, the appeal but also the challenge for the editing of our film quickly became clear: the twelve stories could hardly have been more different in terms of content and style. At the end of the six-month shooting period, we had 160 hours of completely diverse raw material, which we had to somehow put together into a coherent film. Our thanks go first and foremost to the protagonists. They let themselves be accompanied by the camera in an exceptional situation, gave us intimate insights into their lives and let us participate in their thoughts. The pandemic has made them aware of their vulnerability but also their ability to deal with it. They were all united by the compulsion to practice renunciation and modesty, which was not easy for them in a globalized, freedom-loving and at the same time efficiency-oriented world. I hope that we have succeeded in making an emotional and authentic film about the first year of the pandemic, in which you can see that people still had the strength and the will to learn something from the wounds that the virus has torn open and to take something good for themselves from this crisis. Perhaps our film will manage to save this spirit of optimism from last year to the present day, despite the never-ending deprivations and personal tragedies."
