Maquia wurde in eine außergewöhnliche Gemeinschaft hineingeboren. Als die Sippe eines Tages von einer Armee angegriffen wird, wird der bisher friedliche Alltag gewaltsam zerschlagen. Der Großteil der Gemeinschaft wird getötet und eine Freundin von Maquia, Leylia, wird entführt, doch Maquia selbst gelingt die Flucht. Während sie allein durch den Wald streift, findet sie einen Säugling, den sie Erial nennt und fortan aufzieht. Maquia ist glücklich - doch je älter das Findelkind wird, umso bewusster wird sich Maquia, wie ihre Unsterblichkeit nicht nur ihr eigenes Leben beeinflusst...
Mari Okada, bekannt als Drehbuchautorin zahlreicher Animeserien und -filme (wie 'The Anthem of the Heart' oder 'AnoHana'), bezaubert in ihrem Regiedebüt 'Maquia - Eine unsterbliche Liebesgeschichte' (2018) mit einem einzigartigen Epos um Liebe und Freundschaft auf der einen und Sterblichkeit und Verlust auf der anderen Seite. Neben seiner packenden und hochemotionalen Geschichte besticht das Anime-Fantasydrama durch seine wunderschöne, detailreiche und bildgewaltige Animation. Okada selbst sagt über das Projekt: "Maquia - Eine unsterbliche Liebesgeschichte ist genau das, was ich immer schon als Autorin zu Papier bringen wollte. Ich empfinde große Freude und gleichzeitig Druck, mich an allen Prozessen auch jenseits des Drehbuchs beteiligen zu können. Es geht um die Zusammenführung von Menschen und deren schlussendliche Trennung. Es ist eine Geschichte, bei der hoffentlich jeder in der Lage sein wird, sich damit zu identifizieren." Okada gilt als einer der kreativsten Köpfe des Genres und erhielt für ihre Arbeit als leitende Drehbuchautorin der Anime-Fernsehserie 'AnoHana' 2011 den 16. Animation-Kobe-Award. 'P.A. Works' (siehe u.a. 'Canaan' oder 'Angel Beats!') und feierte Anfang 2018 in Japan Premiere, im Anschluss wurde er auf dem Glasgow-Filmfestival gezeigt. Erfolgsregisseur Makoto Shinkai ('Your Name.') erteilte 'Sayonara no asa ni yakusoku no hana o kazarô', so der japanische Originaltitel, den Ritterschlag: "Ein fantastischer Film, der Erinnerungen in einem wecken kann, die man normalweise schon längst vergessen hat. (...) Wenn du dich als neuer Regisseur so einer hochqualitativen Produktion gegenübersiehst, dann wirst du neidisch und ungeduldig. Wir müssen dies als Ansporn nehmen."

Maquia was born into an extraordinary community. Not only does they all have light blonde hair in common, all members maintain a youthful appearance throughout their lives and reach a superhumanly old age. When the clan is attacked by an army one day, the previously peaceful everyday life is violently shattered. Most of the community is killed and a friend of Maquia's, Leylia, is kidnapped, but Maquia herself manages to escape. While roaming alone through the forest, she finds an infant whom she calls Erial and raises from then on. Maquia is happy - but the older the foundling gets, the more Maquia becomes aware of how her immortality affects not only her own life...
Mari Okada, known as the screenwriter of numerous anime series and films (such as 'The Anthem of the Heart' or 'AnoHana'), enchants in her directorial debut 'Maquia - An Immortal Love Story' (2018) with a unique epic about love and friendship on the one hand and mortality and loss on the other. In addition to its gripping and highly emotional story, the anime fantasy drama captivates with its beautiful, detailed and visually stunning animation.
