Emil Forester (Matthew Macfadyen), Londoner Filmregisseur mit Kurzfilm-Oscar in einer Schaffenskrise, wird zur Retrospektive aller seiner zweieinhalb bisherigen Filme zum vermutlich schlechtesten Filmfestival der Welt in die neugegründete Kaukasus-Republik Karastan eingeladen. Dort eröffnet ihm der allmächtige Präsident Abashiliev (Richard van Weyden) eine ungeahnte Möglichkeit: das nationale Filmepos Karastans zu drehen, ohne finanzielle Beschränkungen, ein opulentes Schlachtengemälde mit tausenden Statisten und dem Hollywood-Action-Star Xan Butler (Noah Taylor) in der Hauptrolle. Emil braucht nicht lange, um sich zu entscheiden. Doch in Karastan gelten eigene Regeln. Der durchgedrehte Xan Butler hat seine besten Tage offenbar hinter sich, beim Statisten-Casting hilft das Militär mit vorgehaltenem Sturmgewehr, in den malerischen Bergen operiert eine geheimnisvolle Guerrilla und die verführerische Assistentin Chulpan (MyAnna Buring) ist in seltsame Aktivitäten verstrickt. Das Drehbuch zu 'Welcome to Karastan' schrieb Ben Hopkins gemeinsam mit Pawel Pawlikowski (2015 Oscar-nominiert für 'Ida'), in den Hauptrollen brillieren Matthew Macfadyen ('Anna Karenina', 'The Three Musketeers'), Noah Taylor ('Lara Croft - Tomb Raider', 'Vanilla Sky') und MyAnna Buring ('The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn 1+2', 'Kill List'). 'Welcome to Karastan' feierte seine Weltpremiere auf dem Montreal-International-Filmfestival, auf dem Filmfest Hamburg wurde er mit dem 'Producer’s Award European Cinema' ausgezeichnet.

Emil Forester (Matthew Macfadyen), London film director with a short film Oscar in a creative crisis, is invited to the retrospective of all his two and a half previous films at what is probably the worst film festival in the world in the newly founded Caucasus republic of Karastan. There, the all-powerful President Abashiliev (Richard van Weyden) opens up an unexpected opportunity for him: to shoot Karastan's national film epic, without financial restrictions, an opulent battle painting with thousands of extras and Hollywood action star Xan Butler (Noah Taylor) in the leading role. It doesn't take Emil long to decide. But Karastan has its own rules. The crazed Xan Butler has apparently had his best days, the military helps with the casting of extras at gunpoint, a mysterious guerrilla operates in the picturesque mountains and the seductive assistant Chulpan (MyAnna Buring) is involved in strange activities. Emil makes an honest effort to hold the explosive situation together, but soon much more is at stake than his artistic integrity as a promising auteur filmmaker...
