Wir schreiben das Jahr 1893. In der rauen Landschaft der 'Snowy Mountains' im australischen Outback sind die Hierarchien klar: Weiß über Schwarz. Mann über Frau. Das selbst ernannte Gesetz des Stärkeren regelt das Geschehen in der Stadt 'Everton'. Das niedergeschriebene Gesetz ist Nebensache. Doch genau hier ist die hochschwangere Molly Johnson (Regisseurin und Hauptdarstellerin Leah Purcell) mit ihren drei Kindern auf einer Farm abseits von 'Everton' komplett auf sich allein gestellt. Ihr Mann ist seit Monaten fort zum Viehtrieb im Hochland. Bewaffnet mit einem Gewehr, einem Überlebenswillen aus Stahl und dem Beschützerinstinkt einer Mutter, ist Molly allerdings auf alles gefasst. Sie kennt sich aus im Outback und niemand kann ihr etwas vormachen. Ganz anders geht es Sergeant Nate Klintoff (Sam Reid), der mit seiner Frau Louisa (Jessica De Gouw) ganz frisch in Städtchen ist, um als neuer Polizeichef des Ortes für Recht und Ordnung zu sorgen. Unerwartet treffen ihn die ungeschriebenen Regeln der hartgesottenen Bewohner der 'Snowy Mountains' und er stolpert direkt in die Ermittlungen eines schrecklichen Mordfalls, für den ein geflohener Einheimischer, ein zuvor verhafteter Ngarigo, verantwortlich sein soll. Als dann auch noch Molly Johnsons Mann von seinen Kollegen als vermisst gemeldet wird, verwandeln sich die bereits schwierigen Ermittlungen in ein verworrenes Netz aus Machtkämpfen, Rassismus und Verschwörungen. Als Molly plötzlich auf ihrem Grundstück einen verwundeten Ngarigo auffindet, überschlagen sich die Ereignisse für alle Beteiligten plötzlich. Denn der geflohene Einheimische bleibt nicht der einzige ungebetene Gast vor Mollys Türschwelle und jeder von ihnen hat sein ganz eigenes dunkles Anliegen. The self-proclaimed law of the strongest regulates events in the city of Everton. The written law is a minor matter. But this is exactly where the heavily pregnant Molly Johnson (director and leading actress Leah Purcell) is completely on her own with her three children on a farm away from 'Everton'. Her husband has been away for months to drive cattle in the highlands. Armed with a rifle, a steel will to survive, and a mother's protective instinct, Molly is ready for anything. She knows her way around the outback and no one can fool her. Sergeant Nate Klintoff (Sam Reid), who is fresh in town with his wife Louisa (Jessica De Gouw) to ensure law and order as the new police chief of the town, is in a completely different situation. When Molly Johnson's husband is reported missing by his colleagues, the already difficult investigation turns into a tangled web of power struggles, racism and conspiracies. Leah Purcell's feature film debut 'The Drover's Wife - The Legend of Molly Johnson' (2021) is based on her highly acclaimed play of the same name, her own adaptation of Henry Lawson's gripping narrative. The film celebrated its German premiere at the Braunschweig International Film Festival 2021 and was nominated for the women's film award 'Die Tilda'.
