Der Sikh Umber Singh, der durch die Teilung Indiens 1947 alles verliert und zum Verlassen seiner Heimat gezwungen wird, ist davon besessen, einen Sohn als Erben zu haben. Als seine vierte Tochter geboren wird, nimmt er den Kampf gegen das Schicksal auf. Er gibt ihr den Namen 'Kanwar', 'junger Prinz', und erzieht sie im Glauben, ein Mann zu sein. Als der Sikh die Hochzeit zwischen seinem 'falschen Sohn' und Neeli, einem Mädchen von niederer Kaste, arrangiert, wird die gesamte Familie mit der Wahrheit ihrer eigenen Identitäten konfrontiert. Die Situation eskaliert: Die individuellen Ansprüche und Sehnsüchte Kanwars kollidieren mit der selbst gebastelten Realität und der Besessenheit des Sikh auf der einen und gesellschaftlichen Gegebenheiten und Zwängen auf der anderen Seite. The Sikh Umber Singh, who loses everything due to the partition of India in 1947 and is forced to leave his homeland, is obsessed with having a son as an heir. When his fourth daughter is born, he takes up the fight against fate. He gives her the name 'Kanwar', 'young prince', and raises her in the belief that he is a man. When the Sikh arranges the wedding between his 'false son' and Neeli, a girl of lower caste, the entire family is confronted with the truth of their own identities. The situation escalates: Kanwar's individual demands and longings collide with the self-made reality and the obsession of the Sikh on the one hand and social conditions and constraints on the other. Fate gets into a fight with eternity...
