'Gagarin' erzählt die Geschichte von Youri (Alseni Bathily), der guten Seele einer Nachbarschaft, der an der Idee und an den Erinnerungen eines solidarischen Zusammenlebens festhält, bis es nicht mehr geht. Youri ist der selbsternannte Hausmeister einer 60er Jahre Siedlung in einer Vorstadt von Paris namens 'Gagarin'. Obwohl er und seine Freunde sich größte Mühe geben, können sie nicht verhindern, dass die Stadt beschließt, dass die Siedlung abgerissen werden soll. Nach und nach ziehen alle weg, nur Youri hat für sich beschlossen zu bleiben. Erst mal findet Youri neue Freunde. Das Roma Mädchen Diana (Lyna Khoudri aus 'The French Dispatch') ist fasziniert von seinem Einsiedlertum und der Dealer Dali (Finnegan Oldfield aus 'Corsage') lebt auch noch irgendwo im Gebäudekomplex. Dann aber wird die illegale Siedlung von Dianas Familie von der Stadt aufgelöst. Und auch Dali verschwindet nach eine gewalttätigen Auseinandersetzung mit den Bauarbeitern, die Gagarin versiegeln und für die Sprengung vorbereiten. Als letzter Bewohner lebt Youri in der Siedlung wie in einem Raumschiff. Youri weiß, dass er sich in eine Sackgasse manövriert hat, und dass seine Umgebung immer lebensfeindlicher wird. Aber Youri ist stur, er will seine Mission, wie einen Parabelflug beenden und so arbeitet er an einem Countdown, an dessen Ende die Hochhaussiedlung Gagarin für ihn um Hilfe rufen soll. Leider zählt währenddessen noch ein anderer Countdown von 10 bis 0...
'Gagarin - Einmal schwerelos und zurück' (2020) ist ein Film über eine Nachbarschaft, eine kleine Gruppe der Gesellschaft und einen jungen Mann, der eine gute Rolle in dieser Nachbarschaft hat. Als auf einmal die Tage dieser Gemeinschaft gezählt sind, kann er diesen Ort nicht verlassen, weil er sich über ihn definiert. Das ist es, was die anderen nicht sehen, wie wichtig die Nachbarschaft für Youri ist. Aber vielleicht werden sie durch sein Beispiel sehen, wie wichtig die Gemeinschaft auch für sie war. Man kann sagen, dass Youri so etwas wie ein Spiegelbild der Fürsorge füreinander ist, ein Spiegel der guten Dinge der Gesellschaft. Dinge, die zu leicht in Vergessenheit geraten, wenn Populisten das Negative ständig in den Vordergrund rückt. Der Plot von 'Gagarin' klingt vielleicht wie ein Sozialdrama, aber dem Regieduo Fanny Liatard und Jérémy Trouilh gelingt ein Stück großes Kino, das sich vor Hirokazu Koreeda 'Nobody Knows' und Stanley Kubricks '2001' verneigt. 2020 wurde 'Gagarin' für den Wettbewerb des Festivals von Cannes ausgewählt und gewann in Tübingen als bester Film die 'Französischen Filmtage'.

'Gagarin' tells the story of Youri (Alseni Bathily), the good soul of a neighbourhood, who clings to the idea and memories of living together in solidarity until it is no longer possible. Youri is the self-proclaimed caretaker of a 60s settlement in a suburb of Paris called 'Gagarin'. Although he and his friends try their hardest, they cannot prevent the city from deciding that the settlement should be demolished. One by one, everyone moves away, only Youri has decided to stay. First of all, Youri finds new friends. The Roma girl Diana (Lyna Khoudri from 'The French Dispatch') is fascinated by her hermitage and the dealer Dali (Finnegan Oldfield from 'Corsage') also lives somewhere in the building complex. But then the illegal settlement of Diana's family is dissolved by the city. And Dali also disappears after a violent confrontation with the construction workers, who seal Gagarin and prepare him for the blast. As the last inhabitant, Youri lives in the settlement like in a spaceship. Youri knows that he has manoeuvred himself into a dead end, and that his surroundings are becoming more and more hostile to life. But Youri is stubborn, he wants to end his mission like a parabolic flight and so he works on a countdown, at the end of which the high-rise housing estate Gagarin is to call for help for him. Unfortunately, another countdown from 10 to 0 counts in the meantime...
'Gagarin - Once Weightless and Back' (2020) is a film about a neighborhood, a small group of society and a young man who has a good role in this neighborhood. When suddenly the days of this community are numbered, he cannot leave this place because he defines himself through it. That's what the others don't see, how important the neighborhood is for Youri. But perhaps by his example they will see how important the community was for them as well. You can say that Youri is something like a reflection of caring for each other, a mirror of the good things of society. Things that are too easily forgotten when populists constantly bring the negative to the fore. The plot of 'Gagarin' may sound like a social drama, but the directing duo Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh succeed in creating a piece of great cinema that bows to Hirokazu Koreeda's 'Nobody Knows' and Stanley Kubrick's '2001'. In 2020, 'Gagarin' was selected for the competition of the Cannes Festival and won the 'French Film Days' in Tübingen as best film.
