Dr. Paul Venner (Regisseur und Hauptdarsteller O.W. Fischer), ein eigenwilliger junger Arzt, arbeitet an der Entwicklung eines Serums zur Erneuerung zerstörter Gehirnzellen. Mit Wissen von Sanatoriumsleiter Dr. Brugg (Otto Brüggemann) will er das neue Mittel an dem alten Patienten Forster (Hermann Erhardt) anwenden. Skeptisch beobachten ihn seine Kollegen, die er durch seine zynische Art immer wieder brüskiert. Auch die neue Medizinerin Dr. Francoise Maurer (Anouk Aimée) bekommt seine Kälte zu spüren. Doch sehr bald merkt er, dass sie ihre große Kraft aus ihrem Glauben gewinnt, und es entwickelt sich zwischen beiden eine tiefe Zuneigung. Als sein Versuch scheitert und Forster stirbt, will ihn das Sanatorium loswerden. Da bittet ihn Francoise, mit ihr nach Indochina zu gehen, wo sie eine Stelle als Missionsärztin antreten will. Doch er will den Skeptikern beweisen, dass seine Arbeit seriös ist. Als er die Hilfe seiner ehemaligen Geliebten ablehnt, legt diese in seinem Labor Feuer, um seine Aufzeichnungen zu vernichten. Francoise versucht mit aller Kraft, dieses zu verhindern.

Dr. Paul Venner (director and lead actor O.W. Fischer), a headstrong young doctor, is working on the development of a serum to renew destroyed brain cells. With the knowledge of sanatorium director Dr. Brugg (Otto Brüggemann), he wants to use the new remedy on the old patient Forster (Hermann Erhardt). His colleagues watch him skeptically, whom he repeatedly snubs with his cynical manner. The new physician Dr. Francoise Maurer (Anouk Aimée) also feels his coldness. But very soon he realizes that she gains her great strength from her faith, and a deep affection develops between the two. When his attempt fails and Forster dies, the sanatorium wants to get rid of him. Francoise asks him to go with her to Indochina, where she wants to take up a job as a missionary doctor. But he wants to prove to the skeptics that his work is serious. When he refuses the help of his former lover, she sets fire to his laboratory to destroy his notes. Françoise tries with all her might to prevent this.
