In den georgischen Bergen kreuzen sich zwei Gondeln. Die Blicke der Schaffnerinnen Iva und Nino treffen sich. Ohne Worte verlieben sich die beiden ineinander. Veit Helmers neuer Film 'Gondola' ist eine poetische und unkonventionelle Liebeskomödie, bei der die Bilder die Hauptrolle spielen: Eine altmodische Seilbahn mit zwei Gondeln verbindet ein Dorf in den Bergen Georgiens mit einer Kleinstadt im Tal. Als der alte Schaffner stirbt, nimmt Iva (29) seinen Platz ein, während Nino (31) schon länger dort arbeitet. Immer dann, wenn Ivas Gondel hochfährt, fährt Ninos Gondel runter und umgekehrt. Alle halbe Stunde sehen sich die beiden auf halber Strecke. Aus anfänglich kollegialen Grüßen wird allmählich Necken. Und aus Necken wird Flirten. Sie verwandeln ihre Gondeln in romantische Flugobjekte und versuchen sich gegenseitig zu beeindrucken. Zum Ärger ihres griesgrämigen und eifersüchtigen Chefs. Eines Abends treffen sie sich nach Dienstschluss. Doch Ninos Wunsch als Flugbegleiterin bei der georgischen Fluggesellschaft zu arbeiten, stellt die Beziehung auf eine Probe. Kann die Dorfgemeinschaft den beiden helfen ihr Glück zu finden?
Veit Helmers Kinofilm 'Gondola' (2023) ist eine Liebesgeschichte der anderen Art. Der Film verzichtet gänzlich auf Dialoge und erzählt die Geschichte der zwei Gondelfahrerinnen durch die subtile Körpersprache der hervorragenden Hauptdarstellerinnen Nino Soselia und Mathilde Irrmann, dazu die sorgfältig komponierten Bilder und das eindrucksvolle Sounddesign. In the Georgian mountains, two gondolas intersect. The looks of the conductors Iva and Nino meet. Without words, the two fall in love. Veit Helmer's new film 'Gondola' is a poetic and unconventional romantic comedy in which the images play the leading role: an old-fashioned cable car with two gondolas connects a village in the mountains of Georgia with a small town in the valley. When the old conductor dies, Iva (29) takes his place, while Nino (31) has been working there for a long time. Whenever Iva's gondola goes up, Nino's gondola goes down and vice versa. Every half hour, the two see each other halfway. Initially collegial greetings gradually turn into teasing. And teasing turns into flirting. They transform their gondolas into romantic flying objects and try to impress each other. To the annoyance of her grumpy and jealous boss. One evening they meet after work. But Nino's desire to work as a flight attendant for the Georgian airline puts the relationship to the test. Can the village community help the two to find their happiness?
Veit Helmer's feature film 'Gondola' (2023) is a love story of a different kind. The film completely dispenses with dialogue and tells the story of the two gondola riders through the subtle body language of the excellent leading actresses Nino Soselia and Mathilde Irrmann, plus the carefully composed images and the impressive sound design. The result is a poetic film about longing, love and community that captivates you from the very first minute. Sometimes words are not needed.
