Ricky (Rafael Kaul) ist zehn Jahre alt und liebt Kung Fu. Gemeinsam mit seinem älteren Bruder Micha (Jordan Elliot Dwyer) und seinen Eltern lebt er in einem kleinen Dorf auf dem Land. Ricky trainiert am liebsten mit Xi-Lao Peng (Hoang Dang-Vu), den es in Wirklichkeit gar nicht gibt, an einem geheimen Ort am Waldrand. Niemand darf von dem heimlichen Training erfahren. Vor allem nicht sein Bruder Micha. Der ist nämlich nicht nur größer und stärker, sondern oft auch ganz schön mies. Micha hat gerade die Schule abgebrochen und hängt den ganzen Tag mit seinen Kumpels rum. Für Rickys Vater ist Micha allerdings die einzige Hoffnung die familieneigene Tischlerei, einen Traditionsbetrieb, zu übernehmen, der zu allem Überfluss gerade droht Konkurs zu gehen. Deshalb gibt es oft Streit zu Hause und Micha lässt seinen Frust an Ricky aus. Eines Tages zieht die eigenwillige Alex (Merle Juschka) mit ihrer Mutter ins Dorf. Alex redet nicht gerne und vor allem hat sie keine Lust auf das blöde Dorf, in dem sie jetzt leben muss. Sie wünscht sich nichts sehnlicher als endlich ihren Vater kennenzulernen. Micha ist sehr an Alex interessiert und benutzt Ricky, um mehr über das verschlossene Mädchen herauszufinden. Als Gegenleistung lässt er Ricky in Ruhe und beschützt ihn vor seinen Freunden. Schnell freunden sich Alex und Ricky an. Doch als Ricky sich in Alex verliebt, werden die Dinge kompliziert...
In 'Ricky - Normal war gestern' kombiniert Regisseur Kai S. Pieck ('Ein Leben lang kurze Hosen tragen' 2004) vor der wunderschönen Kulisse des malerischen Thüringens ernsthafte Momenten mit humorvollen Szenen und schafft so einen liebevollen Jugendfilm. Die Konflikte rund um die erste Liebe, Familie und Zusammenhalt sind spannend und gleichsam sensibel in Szene gesetzt und vermitteln echte Probleme, aber auch das ganz große Glück. Hauptdarsteller Rafael Kaul überzeugt in seiner ersten Hauptrolle als eigenwilliger Junge vom Land durch sein unbekümmertes Spiel. Die Rolle des rebellischen aber sensiblen Micha übernimmt der Newcomer Jordan Elliot Dwyer. Nachwuchsschauspielerin Merle Juschka spielt die geheimnisvolle Alex. Petra Kleinert ('Glück', 'FC Venus') und László Imre Kish ('Doc meets Dorf', 'Danni Lowinski') sind die Eltern der Brüder. 'Ricky - Normal war gestern' feierte seine Uraufführung auf dem Deutschen Kinderfilmfestival 'Goldener Spatz' in Erfurt im Mai 2013. Zudem lief der Film auf dem 53. Zlín Filmfestival in Tschechien, auf dem 43. Giffoni Filmfestival und auf dem Kinderfilmfest beim 7. Fünf Seen Filmfestival in Bayern. Im Oktober 2013 wurde er beim Cinekid-Festival in Amsterdam sowie auf 16 weiteren Festivals im In- und Ausland präsentiert. 'Ricky - Normal war gestern' wurde durch den 'Farbfilm Verleih' am 6. Februar 2014 in die deutschen Kinos und anschließend auf DVD hier ins Verleihprogramm gebracht.

Ricky (Rafael Kaul) is ten years old and loves Kung Fu. Together with his older brother Micha (Jordan Elliot Dwyer) and his parents, he lives in a small village in the countryside. Ricky prefers to train with Xi-Lao Peng (Hoang Dang-Vu), who doesn't exist in reality, at a secret location at the edge of the forest. No one is allowed to know about the secret training. Especially not his brother Micha. It is not only bigger and stronger, but often also quite lousy. Micha has just dropped out of school and hangs out with his buddies all day. For Ricky's father, however, Micha is the only hope to take over the family-owned carpentry business, a traditional business, which, to make matters worse, is currently threatening to go bankrupt. That's why there are often arguments at home and Micha takes out his frustration on Ricky. One day, the headstrong Alex (Merle Juschka) moves into the village with her mother. Alex doesn't like to talk and above all she doesn't feel like the stupid village she has to live in now. She wants nothing more than to finally get to know her father. Micha is very interested in Alex and uses Ricky to find out more about the withdrawn girl. In return, he leaves Ricky alone and protects him from his friends. Alex and Ricky quickly become friends. But when Ricky falls in love with Alex, things get complicated...
In 'Ricky - Normal war gestern' director Kai S. Pieck ('Ein Leben lang Kurzhosen tragen' 2004) combines serious moments with humorous scenes against the beautiful backdrop of picturesque Thuringia and thus creates a loving youth film. The conflicts around first love, family and cohesion are exciting and at the same time sensitively staged and convey real problems, but also great happiness. In his first leading role as an idiosyncratic boy from the countryside, lead actor Rafael Kaul convinces with his carefree acting. The role of the rebellious but sensitive Micha is played by newcomer Jordan Elliot Dwyer. Up-and-coming actress Merle Juschka plays the mysterious Alex. Petra Kleinert ('Glück', 'FC Venus') and László Imre Kish ('Doc meets Dorf', 'Danni Lowinski') are the parents of the brothers. 'Ricky - Normal was yesterday' celebrated its world premiere at the German Children's Film Festival 'Goldener Spatz' in Erfurt in May 2013. The film was also screened at the 53rd Zlín Film Festival in the Czech Republic, at the 43rd Giffoni Film Festival and at the Children's Film Festival at the 7th Five Lakes Film Festival in Bavaria. In October 2013, it was presented at the Cinekid Festival in Amsterdam and at 16 other festivals in Amsterdam and abroad. 'Ricky - Normal war gestern' was released by the 'Farbfilm Verleih' on February 6, 2014 in German cinemas and then on DVD here in the distribution program.
