Skifahren, eine der beliebtesten Freizeitsportarten im Winterurlaub: perfekter Pulverschnee, Sonne, Berge, frische Luft und am Abend feiern beim Après Ski. Vor allem in den Alpen hat sich der Massentourismus ausgebreitet und prägt das dortige Landschaftsbild. Doch das Paradies kränkelt. Durch den Klimawandel und die resultierende Schneearmut ist ein massiver Einsatz von Technik notwendig, um unabhängig von natürlichen Wetterbedingungen eine perfekte Winterlandschaft zu produzieren. Das heutige Gebiet der Alpen ist zu einem bizarren Hybriden aus Technik und Natur geworden, gleichzeitig aber auch zu einem Spiegelbild unserer Gegenwart. Die Skigebiete müssen technisch ständig aufgerüstet werden, damit der Ski- und Snowboard-Tourismus weiterhin auf seine Kosten kommt. PEAK beobachtet über ein Jahr lang die Bau- und Produktionsprozesse rund um den Ski-Tourismus und offenbart, was den Wintertouristen sonst unter der dichten Kunstschneedecke verborgen bleibt. Er zeigt die Modifikation von Landschaft und die bleibenden Spuren, die diese Eingriffe hinterlassen. PEAK fragt nach dem Verhältnis von Technik und Natur. Wie künstlich darf oder kann eine Landschaft sein? Oder: Wie künstlich muss sie sein, damit sie unserer Sehnsucht nach Urlaubsspaß und Erholung gerecht wird? Gleichzeitig erfährt der Zuschauer von den Protagonisten, wie schwierig das Überleben in den Alpen ist, wenn man sich nicht mehr auf das Wetter verlassen kann...
Regisseur Hannes Lang, der selbst in den Bergen aufwuchs, zeigt in spektakulären und gleichsam brachialen Bildern die Zwiespältigkeit der Industrialisierung der Alpen, die neben dem Raubbau an der Natur, für die Bevölkerung aber auch den notwendigen Tourismus erhält. Gezielt setzt er die Kamera als Beobachter ein, lässt die ebenso faszinierenden wie verstörenden Aufnahmen für sich sprechen. Ergänzt werden die Darstellungen von den Geräuschen vor Ort. Nicht selten weichen hier die idyllische Ruhe und der Klang des Volkstümlichen den Geräuschen von Ski-Lift, Diskothek und nicht zuletzt dem dröhnenden Lärm von Schneemaschinen. Mit PEAK ist dem Regisseur ein intensiver und kraftvoller Dokumentarfilm gelungen, der die Industrialisierung der Alpen ins Visier nimmt und einen Blick hinter die Kulissen des Massentourismus wirft. In beeindruckenden Panoramaaufnahmen und mit aufrechten Stimmen von den Bewohnern der Alpen erschließt sich dem Zuschauer die bizarre neue Natur, die eine bereits verschwundene imitieren soll. PEAK ist eine Produktion von unafilm in Koproduktion mit Movimento Film und ZDF / Das Kleine Fernsehspiel. Der Film wurde gefördert mit Mitteln der Film und Medienstiftung NRW, DFFF, BLS, Amt für Kultur Bozen sowie Künstlerförderung der autonomen Provinz Bozen. PEAK erhielt 2011 den Dokumentarfilmpreis des Goethe Instituts.

Skiing, one of the most popular leisure sports on a winter holiday: perfect powder snow, sun, mountains, fresh air and party in the evening at après-ski. Mass tourism has spread especially in the Alps and shapes the landscape there. But paradise is ailing. Due to climate change and the resulting lack of snow, a massive use of technology is necessary to produce a perfect winter landscape regardless of natural weather conditions. Today's area of the Alps has become a bizarre hybrid of technology and nature, but at the same time it is also a reflection of our present. The ski resorts must be constantly upgraded technically so that ski and snowboard tourism continues to get its money's worth. For more than a year, PEAK has been observing the construction and production processes involved in ski tourism and revealing what is otherwise hidden from winter tourists under the dense artificial snow cover. It shows the modification of landscape and the lasting traces that these interventions leave behind. PEAK asks about the relationship between technology and nature. How artificial can or can a landscape be? Or: How artificial does it have to be to meet our longing for holiday fun and relaxation? At the same time, the viewer learns from the protagonists how difficult it is to survive in the Alps when you can no longer rely on the weather...
Director Hannes Lang, who himself grew up in the mountains, shows in spectacular and at the same time brutal images the ambivalence of the industrialization of the Alps, which, in addition to the overexploitation of nature, also preserves the necessary tourism for the population. He deliberately uses the camera as an observer, letting the recordings, which are as fascinating as they are disturbing, speak for themselves. The representations are complemented by the sounds on site. It is not uncommon for the idyllic tranquillity and the sound of folklore to give way to the sounds of the ski lift, discotheque and, last but not least, the booming noise of snow machines. With PEAK, the director has succeeded in creating an intense and powerful documentary that focuses on the industrialization of the Alps and takes a look behind the scenes of mass tourism. In impressive panoramic shots and with upright voices of the inhabitants of the Alps, the viewer is introduced to the bizarre new nature, which is supposed to imitate one that has already disappeared. PEAK is a production of unafilm in co-production with Movimento Film and ZDF / Das Kleine Fernsehspiel. The film was supported by funds from the Film and Media Foundation NRW, DFFF, BLS, Office of Culture Bolzano and Artist Promotion of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. PEAK received the Goethe Institute's Documentary Film Award in 2011.
