Regisseur Patrick Desmond ist es in 'The Absence of Light - Darkness Rises' (2006) gelungen, was alle Horrorfans sich lange erhofft haben: die Ikonen des Horror-Genres Michael Berryman ('Hügel der blutigen Augen'), Tom Savini (Splatter-Effekte-Meister u.a. in 'Freitag der 13.') und Caroline Munro (William Lustigs 'Maniac') stehen Seite an Seite vor der Kamera.

US Senator Criswell is up to his shirt collar in scandals and affairs, but would still like to be re-elected. So he turns to the private security company Division 8, whose specialty is to discreetly eliminate problems of the rich and powerful. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, two specialists set out to intimidate or kill anyone who could incriminate the senator. This leads to enemy contact with an equally highly mysterious underground organization called "The Plague".
Deserving veterans of the horror genre from make-up artist Tom Savini to "Last House on the Left" thug David Hess to "Mr. Birth Defect" Michael Berryman ("The Hills Have Eyes") do the honours in a C-movie genre mix that is nevertheless ultra-cheaply staged and hardly convincing in terms of content. Despite the horror celebrities present and certainly also attractive in responsible circles, the whole thing is more like an action thriller, in which mediocre CGI explosions and car stunts clearly take precedence over bloodshed.
