Was würde Jesus im 21. Jahrhundert predigen? Wer wären seine Jünger? Regisseur Milo Rau (siehe zuvor 'Die Moskauer Prozesse' 2014 und 'Das Kongo Tribunal' 2017 hier im Verleihprogramm) kehrt in der süditalienischen Stadt 'Matera' zu den Ursprüngen des Evangeliums zurück und inszeniert es als Passionsspiel einer Gesellschaft, die geprägt ist von Unrecht und Ungleichheit. Gemeinsam mit dem Politaktivisten Yvan Sagnet, der Jesus verkörpert, erschafft Rau eine zutiefst biblische Geschichte. Nach Jesus' Vorbild kehrt Yvan als 'Menschenfischer' in das größte der Flüchtlingslager bei 'Matera' zurück. Unter den dort Gestrandeten, findet er seine 'Jünger', Verzweifelte, die über das Mittelmeer nach Europa gekommen sind, um auf den Tomatenfeldern Süditaliens versklavt zu werden und dort unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen in regelrechten Ghettos hausen - allein in Italien sind das mehr als 500.000 Menschen. Gemeinsam mit ansässigen Kleinbäuerinnen und -bauern begründen sie die 'Revolte der Würde', 'The Revolt of Dignity', eine politische Kampagne, die für die Rechte vonMigrantinnen und Migranten kämpft...
'Das Neue Evangelium' (2020) ist ein filmisches Meisterwerk zwischen Dokumentarfilm, Spielfilm und politischer Aktionskunst. Popstar der Kultur- und Theaterszene Milo Rau inszenierte mit Flüchtlingsaktivist Yvan Sagnet eine moderne Geschichte eines Schwarzen Jesus mit radikal aktuellen Bezügen. Hauptdarsteller Sagnet stammt aus 'Kamerun' und arbeitete selbst auf einer Tomatenplantage in 'Apulien', bis er 2011 den bisher größten Streik in der italienischen Landwirtschaft organisierte. Für dieses Filmprojekt zog er 2019 durch die Lager rund um 'Matera', wo er seine 'Jünger' findet. Es gesellen sich zahlreiche Laiendarstellerinnen und -darsteller aus 'Matera' selbst dazu sowie Kleinbäuerinnen und -bauern der Region, die von großen Agrarunternehmen in den Bankrott getrieben werden und Seite an Seite mit den Flüchtlingen auf die Missstände aufmerksam machen. Gleichzeitig besetzt Milo Rau weitere Rollen mit Schauspielern und Schauspielerinnen aus den Filmen von Pier Paolo Pasolini und Mel Gibson. So ist Enrique Irazoqui, der jüngst verstorbene Jesus-Darsteller Pasolinis, in seiner letzten Filmrolle zu sehen. Als Johannes der Täufer übergibt er mit der Taufe gleichsam den Staffelstab der Jesus-Rolle an Yvan Sagnet. Maia Morgenstern spielt - wie auch bei Mel Gibson - die Mutter des Messias. Und der von der Kritik gefeierte und in Cannes 2018 als bester Schauspieler ausgezeichnete Marcello Fonte spielt Pontius Pilatus. 'DOP' Thomas Eirich-Schneider sind die ikonographisch starken Blickwinkel und eindrucksvollen Bilder zu verdanken, die von der gefühlvollen Musik und Off-Stimme von Vinicio Capossela umspielt werden.

What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would be his disciples? Director Milo Rau (see previously 'The Moscow Trials' 2014 and 'The Congo Tribunal' 2017 here in the distribution programme) returns to the origins of the Gospel in the southern Italian city of 'Matera' and stages it as a passion play of a society marked by injustice and inequality. Together with the political activist Yvan Sagnet, who embodies Jesus, Rau creates a deeply biblical story. Following Jesus' example, Yvan returns to the largest of the refugee camps near 'Matera' as a 'fisher of men'. Among those stranded there, he finds his 'disciples', desperate people who have come to Europe via the Mediterranean to be enslaved in the tomato fields of southern Italy and live there in inhumane conditions in veritable ghettos - in Italy alone there are more than 500,000 people. Together with local smallholders, they founded the 'Revolt of Dignity', a political campaign that fights for the rights of migrants...
'The New Gospel' (2020) is a cinematic masterpiece between documentary, feature film and political action art. Pop star of the cultural and theatre scene Milo Rau staged a modern story of a Black Jesus with radically topical references with refugee activist Yvan Sagnet. The main actor Sagnet comes from 'Cameroon' and worked on a tomato plantation in 'Puglia' until he organised the largest strike in Italian agriculture to date in 2011. For this film project, he moved through the camps around 'Matera' in 2019, where he finds his 'disciples'. They are joined by numerous amateur actors from 'Matera' itself, as well as small farmers in the region who are driven into bankruptcy by large agricultural companies and draw attention to the grievances side by side with the refugees. At the same time, Milo Rau casts other roles with actors and actresses from the films of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Mel Gibson. Enrique Irazoqui, Pasolini's recently deceased Jesus actor, can be seen in his last film role. As John the Baptist, he hands over the baton of the Jesus role to Yvan Sagnet with his baptism, so to speak. Maia Morgenstern plays - as in Mel Gibson - the mother of the Messiah. And the critically acclaimed Marcello Fonte, who won Best Actor at Cannes 2018, plays Pontius Pilate. 'DOP' Thomas Eirich-Schneider is responsible for the iconographically strong perspectives and impressive images, which are surrounded by the soulful music and off-screen voice of Vinicio Capossela.
