Die 32-jährige Petrunya (Zorica Nusheva) hat Geschichte studiert und lebt bei ihren Eltern in einer Kleinstadt in Mazedonien. Als Historikerin sind ihre beruflichen Aussichten schlecht. Deswegen zwingt ihre Mutter sie zur Arbeitssuche, zu der dubiose Treffen mit abstoßenden Arbeitgebern gehören. Als einer dieser potenziellen Chefs Petrunya nach dem Vorstellungsgespräch sagt, dass sie zu alt und hässlich sei und mit ihrem Geschichtsstudium nicht einmal als Näherin tauge, lässt sie anschließend ihrem Frust freien Lauf. Zufällig trifft sie auf eine Prozession, die zum Fluss führt. Es ist Dreikönigstag, und traditionell wirft an diesem Tag der Priester bei der großen Wasserweihe ein gesegnetes Kreuz in das Wasser. Junge Männer springen in die eisigen Fluten, um danach zu tauchen. Glück, Freude und Wohlstand sind dem garantiert, der es zurückbringt. Doch dieses Mal springt auch Petrunya in den Fluss und taucht mit dem Kreuz in der Hand auf. Die Hölle bricht los, und ihre Heldentat gilt als waschechter Skandal. Aber Petrunya hält das Kreuz fest. Sie hat es gewonnen und wird es nicht aufgeben...
'Gott existiert, ihr Name ist Petrunya' feierte seine Weltpremiere im Wettbewerb der Berlinale 2019 und gewann dort den Preis der Ökumenischen Jury sowie den Gilde-Filmpreis. Auf dem Internationalen Frauenfilmfestival Dortmund und Köln 2019 wurde der Film von Teona Strugar Mitevska mit dem Hauptpreis ausgezeichnet.

32-year-old Petrunya (Zorica Nusheva) studied history and lives with her parents in a small town in Macedonia. As a historian, her career prospects are poor. That's why her mother forces her to look for work, which includes dubious meetings with repulsive employers. When one of these potential bosses tells Petrunya after the interview that she is too old and ugly and that her history studies are not even suitable as a seamstress, she then gives free rein to her frustration. By chance, she meets a procession that leads to the river. It is Epiphany, and traditionally on this day the priest throws a blessed cross into the water at the great consecration of water. Young men jump into the icy waters to dive for them. Happiness, joy and prosperity are guaranteed to those who bring it back. But this time, Petrunya also jumps into the river and emerges with the cross in her hand. All hell breaks loose, and her heroic deed is considered a real scandal. But Petrunya holds the cross. She won it and won't give it up...
'God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya' celebrated its world premiere in the competition of the Berlinale 2019, where it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Guild Film Prize. At the International Women's Film Festival Dortmund and Cologne 2019, the film by Teona Strugar Mitevska was awarded the main prize.
