Beto (César Troncoso) lebt mit Frau und Tochter in dem verschlafenen Städtchen Melo im Nordosten Uruguays. Seinen Lebensunterhalt verdient er mit waghalsigen Schmuggeltouren per Fahrrad über die brasilianische Grenze. Eines Tages gerät ganz Melo aus dem Häuschen: Papst Johannes Paul II. hat seinen Besuch angesagt und will seine Uruguay-Tournee ausgerechnet in dieser kleinen Stadt beginnen! Mehr als 50.000 Menschen würden zu diesem Ereignis erwartet, wissen die Medien zu berichten. Das dürfte nicht nur der Seele gut tun, da ist auch ein großes Geschäft zu machen. Fortan haben die Einwohner von Melo nur noch eines im Sinn: der riesigen Volksmenge, die den Papst empfangen wird, Sandwichs und Getränke zu verkaufen. Anders jedoch Beto. Er überlegt sich pfiffig, vor seinem Haus ein kostenpflichtiges Klo zu bauen mit einer Tür, weil er davon ausgeht, dass der eine oder die andere der 50.000 Besucher auch mal muss. Ehefrau Carmen und Tochter Silvia werden Türhüterin und Klopapier-Anreicherin spielen - hundertfache Rendite scheint sicher. Dann könnte Beto sich endlich ein Motorrad kaufen und Silvia in der Hauptstadt studieren. Der Papstbesuch, der Ausgangspunkt der Handlung ist, hat 1988 in Melo tatsächlich stattgefunden. Beto (César Troncoso) lives with his wife and daughter in the sleepy town of Melo in northeastern Uruguay. He earns his living with daring smuggling tours by bicycle across the Brazilian border. One day, Melo goes wild: Pope John Paul II has announced his visit and wants to start his Uruguay tour in this small town of all places! More than 50,000 people are expected to attend this event, the media report. This should not only be good for the soul, there is also a big business to be done. From then on, the inhabitants of Melo have only one thing on their minds: to sell sandwiches and drinks to the huge crowd that will receive the Pope. Beto, however, is different. He cleverly considers building a paid toilet with a door in front of his house, because he assumes that one or the other of the 50,000 visitors will have to do so. Wife Carmen and daughter Silvia will play doorkeeper and toilet paper enricher - a hundredfold return seems certain. Then Beto could finally buy a motorcycle and study Silvia in the capital.
