Kurz nach seiner Ankunft in 'Lincoln' in New Mexico begegnet der Spieler und Revolverheld Doc Holliday (Walter Huston) noch vor der schönen Rio McDonald (Jane Russell) seinem alten Freund Pat Garrett (Thomas Mitchell), der in dieser Stadt Sheriff ist. Als Holliday ihm erklärt, dass er sein gestohlenes Pferd 'Red' sucht, führt ihn Garrett zur Praxis des Zahnarztes, vor dessen Tür das Pferd angeleint steht. Ein junger Mann will das Pferd besteigen, doch Holliday stellt ihn zur Rede. Der junge Mann ist William Bonney (Jack Buetel). Er behauptet, das Pferd von einem Fremden gekauft zu haben, doch Holliday glaubt ihm nicht. Dennoch bewahrt er Bonney, den man auch 'Billy the Kid' nennt, vor der Festnahme durch Garrett. Dieser fordert beide auf, die Stadt bis Sonnenuntergang zu verlassen. Die beiden halten sich jedoch nicht an seine Aufforderung und spielen stattdessen Poker in einem Saloon. Holliday gewinnt jede Partie. Um Bonney zu beruhigen, macht er ihm das Pferd zum Geschenk. In einem unbeobachteten Moment schleicht Holliday hinaus, um das Pferd zurückzustehlen, wird aber ertappt. Als Bonney das Pferd besteigt, wird er von der Kugel eines Heckenschützen verletzt. Bonney kann den Angreifer stellen, der sich als die hübsche Rio McDonald (Jane Russell) entpuppt. Sie beschuldigt Bonney des Mordes an ihrem Bruder und will ihn deshalb aus Rache töten. Im Laufe der Geschichte entbrennt zwischen den Rivalen ein heftiger Wettstreit um Rio und die Besitzrechte des Pferdes 'Red'. Im erbitterten Kampf gegeneinander sind beide zusätzlich gezwungen vor dem Sheriff zu flüchten, was so manche wilde Verfolgungsjagd mit sich bringt.

Shortly after his arrival in 'Lincoln' in New Mexico, the gambler and gunslinger Doc Holliday (Walter Huston) meets his old friend Pat Garrett (Thomas Mitchell), who is sheriff in this town, before the beautiful Rio McDonald (Jane Russell). When Holliday explains that he is looking for his stolen horse 'Red', Garrett leads him to the dentist's office, in front of whose door the horse is on a leash. A young man wants to mount the horse, but Holliday confronts him. The young man is William Bonney (Jack Buetel). He claims to have bought the horse from a stranger, but Holliday does not believe him. Nevertheless, he saves Bonney, who is also called 'Billy the Kid', from arrest by Garrett. He asks both of them to leave the city by sunset. However, the two do not comply with his request and instead play poker in a saloon. Holliday wins every game. To reassure Bonney, he gives him the horse as a gift. In an unobserved moment, Holliday sneaks out to steal the horse back, but is caught. When Bonney mounts the horse, he is injured by a sniper's bullet. Bonney is able to confront the attacker, who turns out to be the pretty Rio McDonald (Jane Russell). She accuses Bonney of murdering her brother and therefore wants to kill him out of revenge. In the course of the story, a fierce competition breaks out between the rivals for Rio and the ownership rights of the horse 'Red'. In the fierce fight against each other, both are also forced to flee from the sheriff, which entails many a wild chase.
