Alex war mit Anfang 20 schon an über zehn Schulen. Nirgends hat er es lange ausgehalten, mit Disziplinzwang und der Konkurrenz unter den SchülerInnen kam er nicht klar. So ging es auch Lena, die sich in der Schule nie frei fühlte und stets gegen die Regeln des Landlebens aufbegehrte. Und für Hanil aus Aachen war Schule eine lästige und völlig sinnfreie Pflichtveranstaltung. Doch sie alle wollten stattdessen nicht nur einfach nichts machen, sondern eine Zukunft für sich reklamieren, die Spaß und Sinn macht. Sie alle sind Teil einer Klasse der Schule für Erwachsenenbildung, kurz 'SFE', in Berlin. Seit 1973 besteht die 'SFE' als basisdemokratisches Projekt: kein Direktor, keine Noten. Bezahlt werden die Lehrkräfte von den SchülerInnen, die gemeinsam über alle organisatorischen Fragen abstimmen. Damit ist diese Schule extrem erfolgreich und schaffte es bis ganz nach oben in den Schulwettbewerben...
Der Filmemacher Alexander Kleider hat einen wilden Haufen von Berliner Underdogs auf ihrem Weg zum Abitur begleitet und auch die LehrerInnen porträtiert, denen nicht nur an der Lehre, sondern an der Neugier der SchülerInnen viel gelegen ist. Sein Dokumentarfilm 'Berlin Rebel High School' erzählt mit viel Witz und Energie von einer radikal anderen Idee von Schule, die Freiheit und Gemeinschaftlichkeit zusammenbringt. Was oft als Leistungsdruck verdammt wird, definieren die SchülerInnen kurzerhand um. Sie sind unbelehrbar und dabei extrem neugierig, sie sind eigen- und doch auch lernwillig. 'Berlin Rebel High School' zeigt mit viel Begeisterung, Sensibilität und Kraft, wie viel gemeinsame Zukunft in dieser Kombination stecken kann.

Alex was already at over ten schools in his early 20s. He couldn't stand it for long anywhere, he couldn't cope with discipline and competition among the students. This was also the case for Lena, who never felt free at school and always rebelled against the rules of country life. And for Hanil from Aachen, school was an annoying and completely senseless compulsory event. But instead they all didn't just want to do nothing, they wanted to claim a future for themselves that was fun and meaningful. They are all part of a class at the School for Adult Education, or 'SFE' for short, in Berlin. Since 1973, the 'SFE' has existed as a grassroots democratic project: no director, no grades. The teachers are paid by the students, who vote together on all organizational issues. This makes this school extremely successful and made it to the top of the school competitions...
The filmmaker Alexander Kleider accompanied a wild bunch of Berlin underdogs on their way to the Abitur and also portrayed the teachers, who are not only interested in teaching, but also in the curiosity of the students. His documentary 'Berlin Rebel High School' tells with a lot of wit and energy about a radically different idea of school that brings freedom and community together. What is often condemned as pressure to perform, the students redefine without further ado. They are unteachable and extremely curious, they are self-sufficient and yet also willing to learn. 'Berlin Rebel High School' shows with a lot of enthusiasm, sensitivity and strength how much common future can be in this combination.
