Der englische Kriminalinspektor Lewis dürfte vielen Zuschauern kein ganz Unbekannter sein. Unter dem Titel 'Inspektor Morse' lief die nach Romanen des Bestsellerautors Colin Dexter entstandene Reihe Ende der 80er Jahre auch im deutschen Fernsehen. Der Assistent von Inspektor Morse war seinerzeit eben jener Robbie Lewis, der jetzt selbst zum Chef aufgestiegen ist. Entstanden als Spin-Off des legendären 'Inspektor Morse', entwickelte sich 'Lewis' in England schnell zum Publikumsliebling. Aufgrund des großen Erfolges wurden viele weitere Folgen produziert. Worin liegt der große Erfolg dieses Formates, das scheinbar ohne Spektakuläres auskommt? In erster Linie sind es die beiden Protagonisten: Kevin Whately spielt die Titelfigur Lewis mit grimmigem Humor und britischen Understatement. Sein Assistent James Hathaway (Laurence Fox), ein studierter Theologe und Hobbymusiker, behält in wirklich jeder Situation die Contenance. Die beiden ergänzen sich großartig und bilden ein Team, dem so schnell niemand etwas vormachen kann. Dann sind da die Kriminalfälle, die spannend und überaus raffiniert gebaut sind und dem Zuschauer reichlich Raum zum Mitraten lassen. Und optisch bietet die Reihe ebenfalls eine Menge, spielt sie doch ausschließlich an Originalschauplätzen in und rund um Oxford.
