Es war einmal... So beginnen die Märchen dieser Welt. Doch die Geschichte über ein kleines Dorf im Süden Chinas könnte eigentlich auch so enden. Denn weit ab von jeglichem sozialen, kulturellen oder technischen Fortschritt passiert hier schon seit langem nichts mehr. Kwok Yun ist Ende Dreißig und unverheiratet. Obwohl sie sich den Traditionen beugt, hat sie eine Affäre mit dem verheirateten Dorflehrer. Aber selbst die kann die Leere in ihrem Leben nicht füllen, ihre Sehnsucht nach Veränderung nicht stillen. Eines Tages steht sie in einem Reisfeld und hört ein eigenartiges Geräusch. Als sie zum Himmel blickt, glaubt sie, ein großes silbernes Ding zu sehen und spürt, wie sie von einer gewaltigen Kraft ergriffen wird. Sie verliert das Bewusstsein. Als sie wieder erwacht, liegt ein Fremder neben ihr, sonnengebräunt und am Bein verletzt. Er ist amerikanischer Geschäftsmann und der erste Westler, dem Kwok Yun in ihrem Leben begegnet. Sie nimmt ihn mit zu sich und versorgt seine Wunden. Doch plötzlich ist er verschwunden. Als Kwok Yun der Dorfvorsteherin Chief Chang von dem Vorfall berichtet, leitet diese die Information ordnungsgemäß an die höheren Stellen weiter und löst damit eine Kettenreaktion aus. Während Regierungsbeamte im Dorf eintreffen und die Bewohner über die angebliche UFO-Landung verhören, erkennt Chief Chang die große Chance für ihr Dorf. Unter ihrer Leitung und mit Unterstützung des Neu-Millionärs Bill Huang weichen Karpfenteiche und Reisfelder neuen Parkplätzen und Touristenattraktionen rund um die UFO-Site, werden das Dorf und seine Bewohner gewaltsam ins 21. Jahrhundert gezerrt. Auch Kwok Yun gerät in den Strudel eines instrumentalisierenden Systems, das im Namen des Fortschritts kein Raum für individuelle Träume zulässt. Die Zukunft des Dorfes ist bereits staatlich beschlossen - die von Kwok Yun jedoch bleibt offen...
2009 gewann Xiaolu Guo mit ihrem ersten Spielfilm 'She, a Chinese' den 'Goldenen Leoparden' beim Filmfestival von Locarno. Ihr im gleichen Jahr entstandener Dokumentarfilm 'Once Upon a Time Proletarian' über die Sorgen und Konflikte ihrer Landsleute in einer sich rasant verändernden chinesischen Gesellschaft sorgte beim Filmfestival von Venedig für Aufsehen und Diskussion. 'UFO in Her Eyes' ist Xiaolu Guos zweiter Spielfilm, basierend auf ihrem Roman 'Ein Ufo, dachte sie', in dem einem kleinen Dorf im Süden Chinas Wundersames widerfährt und dadurch nichts mehr bleibt, wie es mal war. Mit viel Witz und großem Scharfsinn beschreibt sie, wie der unbedingte Wille zum Fortschritt im heutigen China nicht nur unkontrollierbare Dimensionen und absurde Formen annehmen kann, sondern letztlich auch dazu führt, dass sich die Menschen dabei von ihrer Kultur und Tradition entfremden.

Once upon a time... This is how the fairy tales of this world begin. But the story about a small village in southern China could actually end like this. Because far away from any social, cultural or technical progress, nothing has happened here for a long time. Kwok Yun is in her late thirties and unmarried. Although she bows to tradition, she has an affair with the married village teacher. But even she can't fill the emptiness in her life, can't satisfy her longing for change. One day she is standing in a rice field and hears a strange noise. When she looks up at the sky, she thinks she sees a large silver thing and feels how she is seized by a tremendous force. She loses consciousness. When she wakes up again, a stranger is lying next to her, suntanned and injured in the leg. He is an American businessman and the first Westerner Kwok Yun meets in her life. She takes him with her and treats his wounds. But suddenly he has disappeared. When Kwok Yun reports the incident to the village chief Chief Chang, she properly forwards the information to the higher authorities, triggering a chain reaction. While government officials arrive in the village and interrogate the residents about the alleged UFO landing, Chief Chang recognizes the great opportunity for their village. Under her leadership and with the support of the new millionaire Bill Huang, carp ponds and rice fields give way to new parking lots and tourist attractions around the UFO site, the village and its inhabitants are forcibly dragged into the 21st century. Kwok Yun also gets caught up in the maelstrom of an instrumentalizing system that, in the name of progress, leaves no room for individual dreams. The future of the village has already been decided by the state - but that of Kwok Yun remains open...
In 2009, Xiaolu Guo won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival with her first feature film 'She, a Chinese'. Her documentary 'Once Upon a Time Proletarian', made in the same year, about the worries and conflicts of her compatriots in a rapidly changing Chinese society, caused a stir and discussion at the Venice Film Festival. 'UFO in Her Eyes' is Xiaolu Guo's second feature film, based on her novel 'A UFO, She Thought', in which a small village in the south of China experiences a miraculous and nothing remains as it used to be. With a lot of wit and great ingenuity, she describes how the unconditional will to progress in today's China can not only take on uncontrollable dimensions and absurd forms, but ultimately also lead to people alienating themselves from their culture and tradition.
