Der Regisseur Christian Liffers begibt sich mit seinem Team auf Spurensuche nach Kuba. Im Gepäck: Gedichte und Prosatexte des kubanischen Autors Reinaldo Arenas. Texte, die die Sehnsucht nach Liebe, nach sexueller Entgrenztheit und die stolze unbeugsame Haltung im Kampf gegen Diskriminierung beschreiben. Sind diese Sehnsüchte, sind diese Haltungen im heutigen Kuba noch zu finden? Und welche Sehnsüchte, Klischees und Projektionen treiben den Regisseur und viele andere nach Kuba? Gedichte und Prosatexte des Autors sind die Koordinaten, die Bezugspunkte für die Protagonisten und ihre persönlichen Geschichten des heutigen Kuba, die immer im Mittelpunkt stehen. Sechs Männer aus unterschiedlichen Zusammenhängen und unterschiedlichen Altersgruppen beschreiben ihr Leben, ihr Leid, ihre Sehnsüchte und ihre Freuden im heutigen Kuba. Ihnen gemeinsam ist ihre Homosexualität (mit Ausnahme des Transsexuellen Isabel) und ihre tägliche Auseinandersetzung mit der Ausgrenzung von Seiten der kubanischen Machismo-Gesellschaft und der kubanischen Regierung. Sie unterscheiden sich jedoch stark hinsichtlich gesellschaftlicher Stellung und Haltung zum Thema. Der Autor hat in zwei Recherchereisen nach Havanna das Vertrauen der Protagonisten gewinnen können, so dass erstmals in einem Dokumentarfilm Menschen offen vor der Kamera über ihre Homosexualität und ihr Leben auf Kuba sprechen.

A film about the discovery of poetry. Love and longing in a system of oppression and discrimination. Director Christian Liffers and his team go in search of clues to Cuba. In his luggage: poems and prose texts by the Cuban author Reinaldo Arenas. Lyrics that describe the longing for love, for sexual dissolution and the proud, indomitable attitude in the fight against discrimination. Are these longings, these attitudes still to be found in Cuba today? And what longings, clichés and projections drive the director and many others to Cuba? Poems and prose texts by the author are the coordinates, the points of reference for the protagonists and their personal stories of today's Cuba, which are always the focus. Six men from different backgrounds and different age groups describe their lives, their sufferings, their longings and their joys in Cuba today. What they have in common is their homosexuality (with the exception of the transsexual Isabel) and their daily confrontation with the exclusion of the Cuban machismo society and the Cuban government. However, they differ greatly in terms of social position and attitude to the topic. The author was able to gain the trust of the protagonists in two research trips to Havana, so that for the first time in a documentary film, people talk openly in front of the camera about their homosexuality and their life in Cuba.
