In diesem visuell und erzählerisch packenden Animefilm wird die Ursprungsgeschichte des einäugigen Geisterjungen Kitaro (deutsch gesprochen von Andreas Hagl) erzählt, der auf einem Friedhof geboren wurde und der letzte Nachkomme seines Volkes ist: Im Jahr 1956 reist Mizuki (René Oltmanns), ein Angestellter der kaiserlichen Blutbank, in ein abgelegenes Dorf, wo ein Konflikt um die Nachfolge innerhalb eines Pharma-Unternehmens tobt. Mizuki soll nicht nur die Ergebnisse der Testamentsvorlesung aus erster Hand in Erfahrung bringen, sondern auch Informationen über ein geheimes Serum sammeln, welches den Ruhm und den Erfolg der Ryuuga-Familie begründet, die das Pharma-Unternehmen leitet. Doch in dem Ort geht es nicht mit rechten Dingen zu. 'The Birth of Kitaro - Das Geheimnis von Gegege' basiert auf der berühmten Manga-Serie 'Gegege no Nazo' von Shigeru Mizuki, in deren Mittelpunkt der einäugige, von Geistern abstammende Kitarô (mit der japanischen Stimme von Miyuki Sawashiro) steht. Mit diesem Kinofilm wird erstmals die Ursprungsgeschichte der Figur Kitarô erzählt, die in Japan längst Kultstatus hat. Am 18. November 2025 brachte 'Polyband Anime' das Anime-Highlight 'The Birth of Kitaro - Das Geheimnis von Gegege' (Japan 2023) in die deutschen Kinos. Dieser Animationsfilm entstand beim Studio 'Toei Animation' unter der Regie von Gô Koga, der u.a. bei der Erfolgsserie 'One Piece' mitwirkte. Mit über 2 Millionen Kinobesuchern spielte dieser Film in Japan rund 3,21 Milliarden Yen ein, das entspricht ca. 20 Millionen Euro. Im Jahr 2024 erhielt der Film die Auszeichnung als 'Excellent Animated Film of the Year' und war damit automatisch für den begehrten Preis als 'Best Animated Film' bei den 47. Japanese-Academy-Awards nominiert. Nachdem im deutschsprachigen Raum bereits 13 Bände des Mangas auf Deutsch erschienen sind, wird nun auch hierzulande erstmals der Kinofilm veröffentlicht. Darüber hinaus erscheint im Frühjahr 2026 die Serie 'Hakaba Kitaro' erstmalig in Europa.

This visually and narratively gripping anime film tells the origin story of the one-eyed ghost boy Kitaro (voiced in German by Andreas Hagl), who was born in a cemetery and is the last descendant of his people: In 1956, Mizuki (René Oltmanns), an employee of the imperial blood bank, travels to a remote village where a conflict over the succession within a pharmaceutical company is raging. 'The Birth of Kitaro' is based on the famous manga series 'Gegege no Nazo' by Shigeru Mizuki, which focuses on the one-eyed, ghost-descended Kitarô (with the Japanese voice of Miyuki Sawashiro). This feature film tells the origin story of the character Kitarô for the first time, who has long since achieved cult status in Japan. On November 18, 2025, 'Polyband Anime' brought the anime highlight 'The Birth of Kitaro - The Secret of Gegege' (Japan 2023) to German cinemas.
