Die Musikgeschichte verfuhr leider alles andere als gnädig mit dieser "farsa" aus Rossinis Feder. Erst in jüngerer Zeit wurden Schönheit, Witz und Originalität von "Il signor Bruschino" wiederentdeckt. Der Komponist selbst jedoch war sich seiner Sache offenbar von Anfang an sicher und notierte noch im Alter von 66 Jahren an der letzten Seite des handschriftlichen Manuskriptes: "Ich erkläre, glücklich darüber zu sein, diese Jugendsünde geschrieben zu haben." In der Tat hat das frühe Werk nichts von einem Fauxpas, auch wenn die Uraufführung 1813 in Venedig zum Desaster geriet. Dabei ist es gerade die in Form einer knapp fünfminütigen Sinfonia gehaltene Ouvertüre - der damalige Hauptkritikpunkt -, die als Paradebeispiel für Originalität und Einfallsreichtum des erst 22-jährigen Komponisten dienen kann. Auch die im Mai 1989 live aufgezeichnete, stilvolle Inszenierung des Rokokotheaters Schwetzingen belegt, daß es wirklich nichts zu bedauern gibt.

Unfortunately, music history has been anything but merciful with this "farsa" from Rossini's pen. It is only in recent times that the beauty, wit and originality of "Il signor Bruschino" have been rediscovered. The composer himself, however, was apparently sure of his cause from the beginning and, even at the age of 66, wrote on the last page of the handwritten manuscript: "I declare that I am happy to have written this youthful sin." In fact, the early work has nothing of a faux pas, even if the premiere in Venice in 1813 turned into a disaster. Yet it is precisely the overture, in the form of a sinfonia of just under five minutes - the main point of criticism at the time - that can serve as a prime example of the originality and ingenuity of the only 22-year-old composer. The stylish production of the Rococo Theatre Schwetzingen, recorded live in May 1989, also proves that there is really nothing to regret.
