Von 2005 bis 2008 ist Pepe Mujica Landwirtschaftsminsiter, 2009 wird er als Kandidat des Linksbündnisses 'Frente Amplio' zum Präsidenten Uruguays gewählt. Bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen 2014 tritt er verfassungskonform nicht mehr an, bleibt der Politik aber als streitbarer Senator erhalten - sein Nachfolger Tabaré Vázquez, der am 1. März 2015 vereidigt wird, gehört ebenfalls dem Frente Amplio an.
