Deutschland, 1945. Die fünfjährige Sophie und ihre Eltern fliehen vor der Roten Armee. Im Gepäck haben sie nur ein paar Kleidungsstücke und Fahrkarten für ein Schiff nach Amerika. Doch das Schicksal hat andere Pläne. Während einer Rast im Hotel gerät die Familie in einen Konflikt mit dem diabolischen Nazi Scharf und seinem Hitlerjungen Beckmann, mit fatalen Folgen. Im brutalen Handgemenge verliert die kleine Sophie nicht nur ihre Eltern, sondern auch ihre Erinnerungen.
