Marvin Willoughby ist als Basketball-Profi 35 Mal für die deutsche Nationalmannschaft aufgelaufen. Nach seiner Karriere macht er Sozialarbeit in Hamburger Brennpunkten und fördert die talentiertesten Spieler der Stadt. Zusammen mit Freunden holt er 2014 den Profi-Basketball zurück nach Hamburg. Wenn der Film 'Starting 5' beginnt, hat Marvin den Großteil ihrer Vision verwirklicht: in der neu gebauten Inselparkhalle verbinden die 'Hamburg Towers' Sozialarbeit mit Profisport. Doch die Dimensionen des Projekts sind riesig: eine millionenschwere Halle und endlose Verhandlungen mit Politikern, Sponsoren und Spieleragenten setzen ihm zu. Marvin Willouhgby kämpft, mit sich selbst und anderen. Mit Hamed Attarbashi, dem Trainer der 'Towers', mit Lenny und Louis, zwei der größten Talente Deutschlands, die aus der Jugendarbeit des Vereins hervorgegangen sind. Die 'Hamburg Towers' dürfen nicht das gleiche Schicksal erleiden wie der Handball und die 'Freezers' und wieder sang- und klanglos von der Bildfläche des Profisports verschwinden. Doch für sportlichen Erfolg braucht man Geld - und für Geld sportlichen Erfolg. Ein Kreislauf, an dem man eher zerbricht, als dass man ihn brechen kann...
Der Dokumentarfilm 'Starting 5' von Milan Skrobanek begleitet Marvin Willoughby und die 'Towers' durch eine ganze Saison, in der es darum geht, ob die 'Towers' aus der Pro-A Liga in die 'BBL' und damit in die erste Liga aufsteigen werden. Und es ist eine wichtige Saison auch für die jungen und hoffnungsvollen Spieler Lennard Larysz und Louis Olinde, die als Hamburger Jugendliche bei den 'Towers' mit dem Basketball in Berührung kamen. Jetzt stehen beide vor dem Beginn ihrer Profikarriere und müssen sich zum Ende der Saison entscheiden, ob sie dabei bleiben oder zu anderen Vereinen der ersten Liga wechseln.

Marvin Willoughby has played 35 times for the German national team as a professional basketball player. After his career, he did social work in Hamburg's hotspots and promoted the city's most talented players. Together with friends, he brought professional basketball back to Hamburg in 2014. When the film 'Starting 5' begins, Marvin has realized most of her vision: in the newly built Inselparkhalle, the 'Hamburg Towers' combine social work with professional sports. But the dimensions of the project are huge: a multi-million dollar hall and endless negotiations with politicians, sponsors and player agents are taking their toll on it. Marvin Willouhgby fights, with himself and others. With Hamed Attarbashi, the coach of the 'Towers', with Lenny and Louis, two of Germany's greatest talents, who have emerged from the club's youth work. The 'Hamburg Towers' must not suffer the same fate as handball and the 'Freezers' and disappear from the scene of professional sport again without a sound. But for sporting success you need money - and for money you need sporting success. A cycle that breaks you rather than break it...
The documentary 'Starting 5' by Milan Skrobanek accompanies Marvin Willoughby and the 'Towers' through a whole season, in which it is about whether the 'Towers' will be promoted from the Pro-A league to the 'BBL' and thus to the first division. And it is also an important season for the young and hopeful players Lennard Larysz and Louis Olinde, who came into contact with basketball as Hamburg teenagers with the 'Towers'. Now both are about to start their professional careers and have to decide at the end of the season whether to stay or move to other clubs in the first division.
