In ihren ersten Club-Auftritten waren Level 42 eine rein instrumentale Jazz-Funk Band, die aber schnell ihre „Stimme fand“. Für den Erfolg der Gruppe waren Texte und Gesang unerlässlich. Der Sänger/Bassist Mark King wurde Frontmann von Level 42, in dieser Doppelrolle vergleichbar mit nur wenigen anderen Sänger/Bassisten wie Sting oder Jack Bruce. Nur logisch, dass Level 42 schon 1981 „The Police“ auf einer Deutschland-Tournee begleiteten. Die Kompositionen, und noch mehr die Live-Konzerte, sind aber weiterhin stark vom ausgefeilten instrumentalen Zusammenspiel bestimmt. Nach ihrem ersten Top 40 Hit „Love Games“ (1981) ging es nur noch aufwärts. Auf den Wogen der Hit-Single „Hot Water“ (1984) segelte das Album „World Machine“ 1985 in Großbritannien auf Platz 3 und in den USA auf Platz 18. Weltweit wurden LPs in zweistelliger Millionen-Auflage verkauft. Anfang der 1980er Jahre war Rockpalast längst aus dem kleineren Studio L ausgezogen und hatte seine Aufnahmen viel versprechender Gruppen in die Rock-Clubs Deutschlands verlegt, wie in die „Zeche Bochum“, wo Level 42 1983 ihr Rockpalast-Debut gaben. Schon ein Jahr später waren sie mit von der Partie in der Grugahalle Essen bei der 14. Rockpalast-Eurovisions-Nacht: Live-Übertragung eines vollen Konzerts garantiert! Europaweit! Die DVD enthält beide Rockpalast-Konzerte von Level 42 in voller Länge.

In their first club appearances, Level 42 were a purely instrumental jazz-funk band, but they quickly "found their voice". Lyrics and singing were essential to the group's success. The singer/bassist Mark King became the frontman of Level 42, in this double role comparable to only a few other singer/bassists such as Sting or Jack Bruce. It's only logical that Level 42 accompanied "The Police" on a German tour as early as 1981. The compositions, and even more so the live concerts, are still strongly determined by the sophisticated instrumental interplay. After their first Top 40 hit "Love Games" (1981), things only went up. On the waves of the hit single "Hot Water" (1984), the album "World Machine" sailed to number 3 in the UK and number 18 in the USA in 1985. Worldwide, LPs were sold in double-digit million circulations. At the beginning of the 1980s, Rockpalast had long since moved out of the smaller Studio L and had moved its recordings of promising groups to the rock clubs of Germany, such as the "Zeche Bochum", where Level 42 made their Rockpalast debut in 1983. Just one year later, they were part of the 14th Rockpalast Eurovision Night in the Grugahalle Essen: live broadcast of a full concert guaranteed! Europe-wide! The DVD contains both Rockpalast concerts from Level 42 in full length.
