The futuristic city 'Mardock City' is truly not an inviting place. Rune Balot also struggles through her hard life as a prostitute in the gloomy metropolis, which is riddled with all kinds of crimes. When the successful casino manager Shell Septinous frees her from her bleak existence, Rune can hardly believe her luck. Curious about the reason for the abrupt change in her life, she investigates Shell, stumbles into a criminal hornet's nest and is killed in cold blood by her supposed savior. This calls the police to the scene, who, with the help of Dr. Easter, bring victims of capital crimes back to life as cyborgs.
